Title: Century Company records

The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

Included are Lt. Josiah Ryland's C.S.A. diary, describing the Penisula Campaign, a meeting with Jefferson Davis, and the wounding of Gen. Joseph Johnston at the Battle of Seven Pines. Other manuscripts relate to John Ferguson Ryland, John N. Ryland, and Miss Callie Ryland. Miscellaneous Garnett family manuscripts, 1844-1873, include material relating to John M. Garnett and John J. Garnett. Also a copy, 1775, of the will of Humphrey Will, St. Stephens Parish, King and Queen County, Va., and genealogical material of the Corbin, Hill, and Peachy families. The collection also contains a letter to Mademoiselle C. Ryland from Maurice Maeterlenck, 1907 September 21, concerning permission for a benefit performance of "Soeur Béatrice."

William Sulzer Letters, 1898-1941

Title: William Sulzer Letters 1898-1941

Papers of the New York State governor (1913), congressional representative (1895-1913), lawyer. Collection includes mostly outgoing letters, a few of which (Eugene Brewster, Everett Wheeler) refer to Tammany Hall and the impeachment proceedings against the then-Governor. Also a group of 11 incoming letters is in connection with a dinner given by Sulzer in honor of Perry Belmont.
