The collection consists of selected essays and articles written by Bloch on subjects ranging from Isadora Duncan to philosophy to Eastern (Balinese, Cambodian, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Javanese) dance and culture; artwork by Bloch featuring Duncan dancers, dancers and other performers in the Far East, and performers during the Harlem Renaissance; photographs of various subjects, including Balinese, Chinese, Javanese, and Kathakali dancers, the Eastman Theatre in Rochester, New York, chorus girls from the Harlem jazz scene, Nyota Inyoka, Ethel Barrymore, and portraits of Bloch in various costumes and genres, including Duncan, Spanish, Javanese, and flapper poses; and newspaper and magazine reviews featuring Bloch. The bulk of the material covers from the late 1910s through the Harlem Renaissance. Also includes correspondence to, from, and regarding Bloch, notably Nyota Inyoka, George Cukor, and R.H. Macy & Co.; publicity and programs for Bloch's performances and exhibitions; subject files on people and events of significance to Bloch; and audio recordings of jazz music. There is almost no material on Bloch's family (parents, husbands, children) or early education; the correspondence series covers only the earliest years of Bloch's career. While the artwork included in this collection contains nudes and portraits, it mainly consists of dancers and performers. Bloch used as her subjects Duncan dancers, Eastern dancers, New York City Ballet dancers, and most notably dancers, singers, and musicians of the Harlem Renaissance.

The papers contain: correspondence, unpublished lyrics, scripts and other literary writings, copies of The Spectator, Eliscu's weekly column in the National Guardian, film, theater and general political ephemera and internal documents, including from several progressive entertainment industry organizations such as the Hollywood League for Democratic Action, the Hollywood Peace Forum, the Hollywood Anti-Nazi League for the Defense of American Democracy, the Hollywood Theatre Alliance, the Hollywood Writers Mobilization, and the Motion Picture Democratic Committee. There is also a speech, written by Eliscu for for delivery by Progressive Party presidential candidate of Henry Wallace, at an October 8, 1948 campaign appearance in Portland, Oregon.

J. B. Matthews (1894-1966) was a Methodist missionary, college professor, author, lecturer, and prominent conservative spokesman. Collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, statements, speeches, reprints, clippings, broadsides, newsletters, press releases, petitions, and other printed material, chiefly 1930-1969. The principal focus of the collection relates to the work and research of Matthews and his associates in the area of anti-communism, particularly in connection with Matthews' role as Director of Research for the Special Committee on Un-American Activities of the U.S. House of Representatives (1938-1945), Executive Director of the Permanent Subcommittee on Government Operations of the U.S. Senate (1953), and a consultant for John A. Clements Associates. Many of the organizations, newspapers, periodicals, and persons represented in the collection have various leftist, socialist, communist, radical, or pacifist (especially anti-Vietnam War) connections.Individuals represented in the files include Ralph Abernathy, Bella Abzug, Roy Cohn, John Foster Dulles, Dwight D. Jay Gorney (1896-1990) was a composer for musical theater, most notably of the Depression-era hit, “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?” He was questioned by the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) on May 6, 1953 regarding his participation in pro-Communist groups and publications. This collection contains biographical material, documents concerning Gorney’s appearance before HUAC, files on him compiled by the FBI, and sheet music of songs with a political slant.

Stella Bloch papers, 1907-1999

Stella Bloch was an ethnic dancer and artist. Bloch took dance lessons from the Isadorables and then learned native dances of the Near East during a year long trip in 1920. During the 1930s and 1940s she wrote film scripts. In the 1950s with a move to the East Coast, she began to concentrate more on drawing and painting her surroundings. Her work captures Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance. Included in the collection are correspondence, personal papers, writings and photographs.
