Handwritten and signed letter, dated 13 Aug. 1863, and addressed to Colonel John M. Chivington. Wynkoop writes from Camp Weld near Denver, Colorado concerning his scouting expedition on the heardwaters of the Bear, White, and Snake Rivers searching for Ute Indians after an attack on Fort Halleck on 7 July 1863. Also included is a hand-drawn map showing the locations of military posts in Colorado and the nearby areas.

Eaton describes life in the Army on the Colorado frontier during the Civil War. He describes his journey to New Hampshire and back on furlough, noting a flood on the Platte, burned buildings in Lawrence after Quantril's raid, "thrifty" Indian farmers, rumors of Indian troubles, the site of an ambush, and Fort Larned where he met two scapling survivors. He describes life at Fort Lyon, his work as a saddler supplemented by odd jobs including chopping and hauling wood, a visit by the "good Indian" Left Hand, Major Edward Wynkoop, and intemperance and gambling among soldiers. Accidentally injured November 19, 1864, Eaton was still an invalid on the 29th, the date of the Sand Creek Massacre. He describes some of the events leading up to the massacre including the arrival ot the Third Colorado Regiment "bound on a grand Indian hunt," and gives a brief second-hand account of the massacre itself, regretting his inability to chase fleeing Indians after the event. After the massacre Eaton continues his wood chopping business and mentions continued attacks, an escort to Denver, celebrating the fall of Charleston and mourning death of Lincoln, scurvy, a 4th of July celebration, "fleeing" Copperheads, Fort Wardwell (Morgan) and commander Charles G. Otis, desertions and brawls, mustering out and work as civilian employee, a local murder, Major Lyman Kellogg, an inspection tour by Major General Pope, and his journey home. The backs of each volume contain memoranda of correspondence, orders, and cash paid and received.

Includes a scrapbook of newspaper clippings collected by Wynkoop from 1859 to 1891, certificates and letters received by Wynkoop from 1861 to 1883, and a photocopy and typescript of Wynkoop's memoirs. Much of the materials in this collection relate to the Civil War in the West, the Sand Creek Massacre of Indians in Colorado, and John Chivington, a rival of Wynkoop who was also the leader of the American forces responsible for the Sand Creek Massacre.
