Title: Series III : Collected papers on Indiana history, 1759-1882.

Series III contains materials Porter collected to write a history of Indiana. Included are the papers of Benjamin Parke, John Dumont, Charles Dewey, and Samuel Merrill, and materials on Vincennes and early Indiana. Parke's papers include his correspondence with James Brown and discuss Aaron Burr and the Burr Conspiracy, Republican politics, and James Wilkinson. Dumont's papers include correspondence while he served in the Indiana House, and a number of speeches. Dewey's papers are mostly from his years as U.S. District Attorney and focus on his official duties. Merrill's papers deal mainly with his tenure as president of the Indiana State Bank and the Madison and Indianapolis Rail Road Company. The remaining papers deal with Vincennes and early Indiana. Other topics include Samuel Baird's surveys of Vincennes and a summary of speeches made by William Henry Harrison in 1802 at his first Indian Council.

Greene, Nathanael, 1742-1786. Papers, 1777-1780

Title: Nathanael Greene Papers 1777-1780

Nathanael Greene was one of the leading commanders in the Continental Army, and the only officer George Washington saw as capable of leading in his absence. Greene served as a field commander, member of Washington's staff, Quartermaster General, and commander of the Army in the Southern Theater. Greene was born on July 27, 1742 in Potowomut, Rhode Island to a Quaker family, who believed that their children would learn more from manual labor then from attending school. Lacking a formal education Greene was very intelligent and taught himself to read, developing early on a love of books - particularly military history and theory. It was through reading, not experience, where Greene learned his knowledge of military science. Between 1778 and 1780 he reluctantly served as Quartermaster General, and was able to drastically improve supplying the Continental Army. Greene ended his military career leading the American Southern army to victory over the British. Greene died in Georgia in June 1786. The Papers of Nathanael Greene come from Greene's tenure as Quartermaster General of the Continental Army between 1778 and 1780. The collection primarily consists of Greene's correspondence with officers in the quartermaster department, officers in the Army (including George Washington), and members of the Continental Congress; relating to the operation of the Quartermaster Department with requests for supplies, forage, and money. In addition, there is also correspondence between officers of the Quartermaster Department. The content of the letters provide a detailed account of the logistical obstacles that Greene and his subordinates faced in trying to keep not only the Quartermaster Department but the Continental Army running. The papers do not contain any material relating to Greene's military service or private life either before or after his tenure as quartermaster general.

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915

Title: Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915

Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

Title: Papers, 1803-1912.

Most of the documents in this collection are related to Josiah Akin, including his will, a commission in the militia, and a news article about him by his grandson. In addition, there is a permit to purchase Southern-made goods, and a permit for the ship Kate Howard to proceed to Louisville, both dated 1863. Other items include a list of William Ritchie's children, a Stewart family birth record, and a cordial recipie.

Note of receipt of pay on Sept. 24, 1793, from Caleb Swann through warrant from General Anthony Wayne, signed by Thomas Posey.

The collection consists of two items. The first item is a June 27, 1795, land indenture. In this indenture, John Lewis and his wife, Mary, of Spotsylvania County, Virginia, are selling land in Jefferson and Shelby County, Kentucky, to Thomas Posey. The land consisted of two tracts, totaling 8,000 acres. It was being sold for 1,445 pounds. This indenture was signed by Harry Innes. The second document is a tax assessment for Morgan Brown's property for the year 1806. It was signed by John Lewis for Thomas Lewis in 1807.

A native of Fairfax County, Va., Posey was a military officer and politician. He served in the Revolutionary War and in campaigns against Indians in Pennsylvania and the Northwest Territory; as a state senator and lieutenant governor in Kentucky; as a U.S. Senator from Louisiana; as governor of the Indiana Territory; and as an Indian agent in Illinois. His second wife was Virginia native Mary Alexander Thornton Posey.
