Correspondence concerns food, clothing, and other supplies for the American forces in the Revolutionary War; the conduct and promotion of Continental Army officers; debates on the Constitution; the war with France and Gerry's diplomatic mission to France; and Massachusetts and national politics. Reference is also made to Gen. Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga, the conditions of Revolutionary War hospitals, and the Louisiana Purchase. Correspondents include John Adams, Samuel Adams, Gerry's wife Ann Thompson Gerry, Joseph Hawley, James Lovell, James Sullivan, Joseph Trumbull, James Warren, and John Wendell. Letters of Mercy Otis Warren refer to her historical researches and writings, and to personal matters.

Parrott. There are family papers of the Wendell family as well as family papers of the Dorr and Barrett families, exercises in navigation kept by John Orn and Jacob Wendell, and a memoir of the Wendell family. Papers of the Wendell family of Boston, Mass. and Portsmouth, N.H. Papers of Jacob Wendell, a prominent Boston merchant, include accounts, receipts, and other business papers; materials relating to his role as one of the Mass. commissioners sent to treat with the Six Nations (Iroquois) Indians at Albany, N.Y. (1744-45); and papers on the development of Pittsfield, Mass., including plans. Account books include accounts for his work building the snow (ship) Prince of Orange (1740-44); a daybook (1813-28); and estate accounts (1716-30). There are also an account book (1748-60) and receipt book (1741-50) of Wendell's firm, Jacob, John, and Jacob Wendell. Papers of Portsmouth, N.H. merchants John (1731-1808) and George W. Wendell include letters, accounts, bills, and receipts; and papers related to real estate interests in Saville (later Wendell, now Sunapee) and Trecothick (now Ellsworth), N.H. Other papers include accounts (1827-39) and daybooks (46 vols., 1832-37) kept by Samuel Pray of Portsmouth; several letters regarding John Q. Adams's attack of the Hartford Convention leaders during his 1828 re-election campaign; papers related to the First Church of Cambridge, in particular the ministry of Nathaniel Appleton; and papers on relations between Mass. and N.H. Later correspondence concerns Mass. and national politics, Gerry's diplomatic mission to Paris and the subsequent war with France, the Louisiana Purchase, and the Jefferson and Madison administrations. Gerry's letters to his wife Ann Thompson Gerry and his children Ann, Eliza, and Elbridge Gerry describe Washington and its social life, as well as news about the War of 1812. (Cont) Letters and diary (1832) of James Thompson Gerry describe various places in the Mediterranean and give accounts of his command of the U.S.S. Albany. Unsorted papers of the Townsend family, particularly of Dr. George J. Townsend, are also included.
