Collection deals almost exclusively with Gilbert Stuart. Park corresponded with owners of paintings by Stuart and with Charles Henry Hart, a noted authority on art and the history of portraiture. This correspondence concerns Stuart's subjects and their family genealogies, dimensions of portraits, their dates, and provenance. Notes and biographical information on Stuart are also included.

Title: John Hill Morgan Research Files, 1922-1944.

Correspondence, approximately 500 black and white photographs of George Washington portraits, handwritten and typed notes, annotated volumes, printed material, some drafts of Morgan's writings, and copies of diaries and letters document John Hill Morgan's research on portraits of George Washington and other early American works. Papers date from 1920-1944, with a few printed items dating from 1892-1913. The bulk of the collection contains Morgan's research and correspondence for his 1931 book, "The Life Portraits of George Washington and Their Replicas," which he co-authored with Mantle Fielding. Also of note is Morgan's research on Gilbert Stuart, which includes reference materials and his annotated volumes of "Gilbert Stuart: An Illustrated Descriptive List of His Works" (1926) by Lawrence Park. Additional research in the collection concerns portraits of George Washington not included in Morgan's or Park's books, and fakes of early American oils and drawings: Frank Bayley's sale of a Washington portrait later determined to be a copy (in Series IV: Gilbert Stuart), and a series of fake drawings sold in the 1920s and early 1930s by a man using various aliases, including George J. Shepard, Ferdinand Danton and John J. Hughes (in Series V: Shepard-Hughes-Danton Fakes).

This collection is a compilation of Park's extensive correspondence, for the period 1910 to 1924, with museum directors, portrait owners, authors, publishers, photographers, art connoisseurs, and a variety of scholarly institutions concerning his work in the field of colonial art. Included are letters on the value of specific works, letters with detailed descriptions of portraits, letters on the compilation of photographs of old Worcester views (with which Park became involved in 1924), letters on the advisability of unearthing the old gravestones on Worcester's common. There are also many photographs of portraits collected by Park and by Clarence Saunders Brigham (1877-1963).

Papers of lawyer Asa F. Lawrence of Pepperell, Mass. contain legal papers related to estate, bankruptcy, and other cases; deeds (in particular to lands in Pepperell), writs, and other legal documents; and correspondence. His personal papers are made up primarily of bills, receipts, and other financial records of household and other expenses. Also included are a few papers of Francis Lawrence, a Charlestown, Mass. merchant; of John G. Lawrence, including Civil War papers kept while he was a surgeon on the U.S.S. Potomac and a list of medicines on hand on the U.S.S. Potomac from Jan.-Feb. 1864; a few papers of Lawrence Park; and other misc. receipts and bills, possibly of other clients of Asa F. Lawrence.

Nichols, Arthur Howard, 1840-1922. Papers, 1909-1912.

The collection is in four series: I. Letters received, ca. 1909, in response to a survey on the bells cast by Paul Revere; II. Letters received, 1910, regarding the placement of bells in the U.S. Custom House tower, Boston; III. Manuscripts, typescripts, galleys and proofs for his (mostly) published research on bells and bell ringing; IV. Misc. notes, researches and clippings, in 1 vol. Nichols published his research on the Revere bells in Bells of Paul and Joseph W. Revere (Boston, 1911) and in the Essex Institute Transactions, 1912, but the correspondence, from local historical societies, churches and town halls, contains much more-fascinating scraps of information shedding light on the history and progress of small towns all over New England. Correspondents include Clarence S. Brigham, Arthur Theodore Lyman, Lawrence Park and John Whitehill. In 1910, a bizarre controversy erupted when Sarah G. Wheelwright (Mrs. Andrew C.) of Boston proposed a gift of bells (in memory of her late husband) to be hung in the new Custom House tower. The case was brought before the U.S. Senate for approval, and is fully documented in a large group of letters from and between notable architects, policicians and literary figures, including Robert Swain Peabody, Ralph Adams Cram, Samuel Walker McCall, Sereno Elisha Payne, Charles Dewey Hilles, Henry Cabot Lodge, Nicholas Longworth, Abbott Lawrence Lowell and Ellery Sedgwick.

Title: Lawrence Park Research Files on Gilbert Stuart, 1904-1925 (bulk 1920-1925).

This collection consists primarily of correspondence concerning the history and authentication of paintings by Gilbert Stuart, a prominent early American portraitist. Begun as an independent project by Lawrence Park, the project was completed by William Sawitzky under the auspices of Helen Clay Frick and the Frick Art Reference Library after the death of Mr. Park in September 1924, and resulted in the publication "Gilbert Stuart: an Illustrated Descriptive List of his Works." The collection contains Lawrence Park and William Sawitzky correspondence with the owners of paintings, scholars and descendents of portrait subjects, and note cards arranged by portrait subject detailing information about Stuart's paintings. Items such as notes, correspondence, drawings, and family trees were attached to many of the note cards.

Collection consists primarily of Fielding's study notes for Life and Works of Thomas Sully and Life Portraits of Washington. It includes 273 photographs of Sully portraits that correspond to the catalogue in Life Works of Thomas Sully; an incomplete set of proof pages from Life Works with comments made by Fielding; 23 letters from Lawrence Park to Fielding concerning Gilbert Stuart portraits; 14 letters from Thomas B. Clarke about Stuart's portraits of George Washington; 125 pieces of correspondence from various individuals and galleries mostly pertaining to portraits of George Washington; a set of clippings, photographs, pages from gallery catalogs, and notes on American artists; a scrapbook with pictures from catalogs relating to European artists; 190 photographs of Washington portraits with notes that correspond to items listed in Life Portraits of Washington; 180 photographs, notes, and engravings that address Washington portraits done by unknown artists or that are of questionable attribution; proof pages for Life Portraits with some clippings about the book; and finally, an annotated copy of Fielding's Catalogue of Engraved Work of David Edwin, with miscellaneous notes and letters about it.

Lawrence Park's diary of March-April 1923 trip to South Carolina to identify and photograph paintings throughout the state for the Frick Art Reference Library. Lawrence Park, Helen Clay Frick (for 3 weeks of the trip), Ira Martin, and various friends of Miss Frick made the trip. The diary is handwritten and full of enclosures. It gives a detailed account of their activities (who they met, where they went, where they stayed, what they ate, and what they saw).

Background material on early American portrait-painters collected in 2 manuscript volumes: "Early American artists and their works" and "Portraits with descriptive and biographical lists: John Smibert, 1688-1751." Other artists include Joseph Badger, Robert Feke, and Gilbert Stuart. Each volume contains bound notes as well as loose correspondence, notes, sketches and photographs providing information about artists, sitters, and portraits. Includes manuscript essay on Joseph Blackburn. A small collection of lantern slides and glass negatives, mostly photographs of early American paintings, has been moved to the photograph collection.
