Papers of Richard Cranch, watchmaker, legislator and jurist of Braintree, Mass., 1767-1844 include an early letter from Nathaniel Ward referring to Cranch's inventions for clock pendulums and thermometers, 31 March 1767; papers relating to his duties in the Mass. General Court, 1782-87; certificates of membership and notices for various societies, 1787-94 including a letter from Jeremy Belknap, 28 December 1791 announcing his election to the Massachusetts Historical Society (which he declined); and a draft of a letter by Cranch to John Adams, 1790 about Nathan Reed's abilities as an inventor. The collection also documents Richard Cranch's interest and membership in the Humane Society, the Derby School, Hingham, Mass., Massachusetts Society for Promoting Agriculture, and the Society for Propagating the Gospel among the Indians in North America. Collection also includes papers of Richard's son, William Cranch such as briefs on legal cases, 1802-40 including a Supreme Court opinion by Bushrod Washington on the case of Grotius (DeWitt Clinton) 1815; letters to William Cranch mainly on legal subjects from Clement Cox, and Henry W. Davis, 1832-44; and a letter from his son-in-law Erastus Brooks describing his trip to New England and writing for the New York Express.

Papers of Unitarian minister and Transcendentalist, Christopher Pearse Cranch of Cambridge, Mass., 1828-92 include original letters, typescripts and extracts of letters and diaries gathered by Cranch's daughter, Leonora Cranch Scott, in preparation for her 1917 book, The Life and Letters of Christopher Pearse Cranch. Cranch's letters describe his activities at the Harvard Divinity School, his interest in the Transcendentalist movement, friendship with Ralph Waldo Emerson and his involvement in the Brook Farm community at West Roxbury, Mass. Includes letters to his family and wife Elizabeth de Windt, 1846-63 describing his trip to Europe as a painter; and letters to friends, among them Mrs. George L. Stearns, John S. Dwight, and George William Curtis, describing his musical, literary, and artistic pursuits. In addition to correspondence, the collection includes essays, poetry, and translations; a collection of loose ink sketches and a sketchbook, 1875-76; and a commonplace book, 1872-79. Other correspondents include George W. Curtis, John S. Dwight, Ralph W. Emerson, James R. Lowell, George Ripley, and William W. Story. Collection also includes papers of Christopher's father and grandfather William and Richard Cranch as well as other members of the Cranch family, 1782-1828. The papers of Richard Cranch include correspondence with his wife, Mary Smith Cranch; correspondence between Richard and in-laws Abigail and John Adams; and correspondence with nephew Christopher Cranch, and cousins Robert Garland and Joseph Cranch. William Cranch's papers include correspondence, primarily with his family and father Richard written while a student at Harvard College, 1784-87, while studying law at Haverhill, Mass., 1789-94, and while an agent with the Washington, D.C. real estate firm of Morris, Nicholson, and Greenleaf. Also included is an annotated almanac for 1797 noting church interests and accounts. Collection also includes letters from Abigail Adams, daughter of John and Abigail, to her cousin Eliza Cranch, 1784-91; and research and publication notes of Leonora Cranch Scott for the publication of her book.

Several letters written by members of the Abigail Adams Smith family including John Quincy Adams, Abigail Adams, and Colonel William Stephens Smith. Also, letters from Richard and Lucy Cranch, Smith's in-laws. Other correspondents include Daniel Webster, George Washington, Colonel William Bradford, James Monroe, Dr. Cotton Tufts, Dr. Benjamin Rush, and Nicholas Biddle. Subject matter of letters concerns political and military events, business affairs, news of family and friends, death of George Washington, and personal opinions and philosophy. A letter written by Abraham Lincoln to Union General George B. McClellen pertains to military campaign tactics, 1862.

The collection contains correspondence; account books (1751-1814); business and legal papers kept as a lawyer, attorney-general of Mass., and judge; minutes of trials, including the Boston Massacre and Shays' Rebellion trials; and documents related to his work as a local and state politician. (Cont'd) Earlier papers include his sea journals/logbooks kept from 1750-54 on the sloops Success to Cape Hatteras and Hannah to North Carolina, the Azores, and Cadiz, Spain on trading voyages and on the sloop Seaflower on a whaling voyage off Greenland; diaries (1745-1814); and sermons given in Mass. and as a chaplain on the Crown Point Expedition during the French and Indian War (1755). Also included is a significant amount of Paine family correspondence, legal, and financial papers (including the estates of Paine and his father Thomas). Title: Papers, 1774-1818, 1879.

This collection of manuscripts contains personal letters, an essay, poetry, and legal documents generated by members of the Cranch family, mostly in America. The correspondence is primarily between Elizabeth Cranch Norton (1763-1811), daughter of Richard Cranch, and her cousin, Elizabeth Palmer Cranch. These letters are always personal and frequently discuss travel plans and family matters. A few legal documents are of Richard Cranch (1726-1811) and deal with the purchase of stock in Massachusetts. There is an essay written by John Cranch (1751-1821) of Bath, England, "An Account of Antique Remains found in the city, suburbs, & vicinity of Bath since the year 1814...." This was presented at the American Antiquarian Society in 1818 after Cranch's election as a member. Finally, this collection includes two poems and a note written by Christopher Pearse Cranch (1813-1892).

Also includes a draft of a letter to James Elworthy in England introducing Abigail and her daughter 1784; correspondence with Jeremy Belknap 1781, David Carlisle, 1797-98, and Edward Pope, 1802; and correspondence with Col. Thomas Johnson, 1805 about land owned by the Cranch and Adams families in Salem, Vermont. Papers of William Cranch include letters from members of the Adams family, 1781-97 including letters from John Quincy Adams to his cousin describing Delft, Netherlands, 1781 and Newburyport, Mass., 1790; a letter from John Adams to William Cranch, 14 March 1790 praising the usefulness of the Bar Association; and letters from Abigail Adams, 5 July, 15 Nov. 1797. Collection also includes some papers of Christopher Pearse Cranch 1835-82; and Cranch family genealogical information including an undated memoranda about "Mr. Trist's" will containing information about the Cranch family.
