This collection contains 143 pen and ink drawings, roughly measuring 8 x 10. The subjects depicted include prominent Alabamians such as Braxton Bragg Comer, William J. Samford, and Dr. Peter Bryce, and important historical events such as the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, the running of the first electric street car and the founding of various societies. The drawings run the gamut of Ala. history, beginning with prehistory and coming up to modern times.

Papers of and about George Rogers Clark, the most noted military commander in the western campaigns of the Revolution, gathered by Draper from relatives, descendants, and other historians; by transcripts from archives in Spain, Virginia and other localities for an intended complete biography. Included are papers gathered from Clark's descendants and from others who had proposed biographies, recollections of Clark's role in the early history of Kentucky and the Revolutionary War in the West, notes, copies of documents, and interviews with participants or their descendants. Draper's own voluminous notes and drafts of the first two chapters of Draper's proposed biography are also present.

Albert J. Pickett papers, 1779-1904

The Albert J. Pickett Papers form approximately one-half of the Pickett Family Papers, LPR185. The History of Alabama series is the largest series within the Albert J. Pickett Papers, and it contains letters and manuscripts Pickett received from numerous prominent individuals in the course of writing his book. Some people sent Pickett their reminiscences of major events, while a few sent Pickett documents from the late 1700s and early 1800s. The Creek Indian War of 1813-1814 is particularly well-documented. Many of the letters advised Pickett of potential sources of information. Most of the letters and manuscripts were bound together in two volumes by Pickett. This series also includes drafts of the book. The correspondence series contains letters from Pickett to family members, chiefly his wife. Several of the letters were written in 1851 when he travelled to New York and Charleston to arrange the publication of the History of Alabama. The scrapbook, clippings, and speeches series contains a scrapbook assembled by Pickett of articles he wrote and articles about his History of Alabama. Most of the clippings and speeches not in his scrapbook are transcriptions.

Title: Draper manuscripts: Kentucky papers, 1768-1892.

Collection of papers of diverse dates and formats dealing with the early history of Kentucky. The original manuscripts were created by pioneer Kentucky settlers representing numerous occupations and professions--land promoters, surveyors, farmers, housewives, historians, teachers, clergymen, merchants, and soldiers. Several volumes relate primarily to events, institutions, and people in the city of Lexington, Kentucky; elsewhere is material on the development of Louisville and other communities. A major portion of the collection consists of the papers of John D. Shane, a Presbyterian minister in Ohio and Kentucky.

ALS in response to recipient's request for information regarding the physical resources and agricultural productions of the frontier country and remote settlements on the Ohio-Kentucky border, and the area's potential as a trading center. Floyd describes the fertile soil in which corn, hemp, tobacco, and other crops are grown; the large quantities of sulpher ore, lead, and iron ore; and the excellent water routes on which to import and export goods. He further suggests that a trading post be established at the Falls of Ohio (present-day Louisville area), and that initiating trade with the Indians, who currently trade with the British, would lessen Indian hostility toward the settlers. Floyd assures his correspondent that Americans have discarded all their prejudices against the French, and are very anxious to see the commercial venture realized. Accompanied by typed transcript.

Topics include surveying, old treaties with the Cherokees, the education of his children, legislation in the House of Delegates, stocks in the Second Bank of the United States, and other types of property.
