Minutes, 1757, in two bound volumes, including attendance lists, addresses and correspondence relating to a Council on Indian Affairs held at Easton, Pa. from 21 July to 7 August, 1757. One volume is a rough draft of the other. Indian alliances, treaties, land disputes and deeds were among the subjects discussed; items presented to the Indians were also mentioned. Benjamin Chew, James Hamilton, Lynford Lardner, John Mifflin, Richard Peters, Conrad Weiser, George Croghan, William Denny and Teedyuscung were among those in attendance.

Title: Papers of John Forbes [manuscript], 1755-1759.

The papers from Forbes's campaign against the French at Ft. Duquesne contain correspondence, reports about Indian allies and the colonial governments, military returns and instructions, intelligence reports and some financial papers. They concern strategy, supply, the advance across Pennsylvania, colonial cooperation, provisioning of the troops, Indian negotiations and relations with British and colonial officers. Material is present from other British campaigns in the French and Indian war, particularly the assault at Ft. Ticonderoga, the massacre at Ft. William Henry, the siege of Louisburg, and Braddock's defeat which is described in the letterbook of Sir John St.Clair, the highest ranking officer to survive.

Indian treaties and deeds, 1683-1794.

Title: Indian treaties and deeds, 1683-1794.

Treaties and deeds relating to Pennsylvania and New York. Manuscript dated April 26, 1793. An official copy created by the United States Department of State "containing Deeds and other acts of certain Nations of Indians conveying land to the State of New York." Records various treaties and the names of Indian chiefs who negotiated treaties with the state of New York between 1748 and 1791. 26 pages. Contemporary copies of two letters addressed to the United States Secretary of War from Major R.B. Roberts and Constant Freeman, Fort Fidius, Georgia, on May 10, 1794. The letters describe an unprovoked attack on frontier Indians by Major Adams. Also included is Dr. Frederick Dalcho's report on this attack. Attached is an 1845 copy of a 1792 speech by General Rufus Putnam to the Miami Indians. Manuscript compilation of assorted meetings of the Pennsylvania Governor's Council relating to treaties and meetings with various Indian tribes and their chiefs between 1683 and 1755. 48 leaves. Manuscript petition of Benjamin Franklin "To the Kings Most Excellent Majesty for Council," written in the hand of Timothy Matlack. This is an extension of two petitions filed by Franklin in 1758 and 1759. The petition is a detailed report on previous treaties between American Indian tribes and chiefs and the Penn family and contains detailed information about American Indian tribes and their relationships with Anglo-Americans and Great Britain. 37 pages.

Title: John Hugh memorandum book, 1704-1762, bulk 1756-1757.

John Hugh's memorandum book contains the records of some of his business affairs, including accounts of goods given out on credit, goods received, and money paid and received. The most substantive portions of the volume consist of entries made during conferences held in Easton, Pennsylvania, between Native Americans and Pennsylvanians during July and November 1756. The volume also includes records for travel expenses incurred in April 1757. These later entries, written after Hugh's death, may have been made by his son or grandson.

This collection includes original manuscripts collected by Hi Doty relating to early Quaker involvement in Indian affairs from 1756 to 1821 and the Friendly Association. Of particular interest are documents concerning the settlement at Oneida and the Treaty of Easton. Correspondents include Tedyuscung, Nathaniel Holland, Frederick Post, John Hunt, William Cooper, Israel Chapin, William Savery, James Pemberton, and Joseph Elkinton. Also included in the collection are several letters written by 19th century Quakers on a variety of topics. Among the latter are eight letters received by Joel and Hannah E. Bean.

The first volume includes extracts from the journals of Conrad Weiser and Christian Frederick Post (1757), Charles Thomson's "An Enquiry into the causes of the alienation of the Delaware and Shawanese Indians from the British interest" (1759), and a printed version of Judge Bradford's "Statement of facts and observations respecting the penal laws" (1792). The second volume contains selected letters and documents in the Pennsylvania state records on Indian relations, including transcriptions of several treaties between the Province of Pennsylvania and the Delawares and other Indians (1755-1758); the French and Indian War; and Braddock's campaign. Some manuscripts are written by Deborah Norris Logan and Charles Thomson.

They include a short biographical sketch about Chief Cornplanter and his sons; a letter written by John Langdale to Benjamin Franklin in 1764 about the nobility of character among the American Indians; a letter describing an incident involving a drunk Delaware Chief at a council meeting; a document about Chief Teedyuscung; extracts from a pamphlet entitled Some Observations on the Situation, Disposition, and Character of the Indian Natives of this Continent, published 1784; essay on religious opinions of the Muncy Delaware or Lenne Lenape Indians in their original state; and Captain Croughan's address to Indians on the Susquehanna, with notes mentioning the similarity of the speech to others.

Timothy Horsfield Papers, 1684, 1733-1771

Title: Timothy Horsfield Papers 1684, 1733-1771

An early settler and prominent citizen in the Moravian heartland near Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Timothy Horsfield was named justice of the peace when Northampton County was formed out of Bucks in 1752, and was one of those given responsibility for the defence of the local white and Christian Indian populations during the French and Indian War. The Horsfield Papers offer a window onto the tumultuous history of northeastern Pennsylvania during the 1750s and 1760s. Comprised largely of correspondence and related documents between Horsfield, William Parsons, and provincial and military authorities, the collection includes important information on the Indian assaults on the region in 1756 and 1757 and the military and diplomatic response.
