Title: Inventory of the Sewell H. Hopkins Papers, Oyster Mortality Reports 1913-1961 (bulk: 1941-1955)

Sewell Hepburn Hopkins (1906-1984), a marine biologist and Professor of Biology at Texas A & M University (1935-1972) was best known for his research into the effects of oil spills on marine life in the Gulf of Mexico. The Hopkins Papers primarily include copies of articles concerning research conducted during Research Project 9 (1947-1950), headed by Sewall Hopkins and sponsored by the Texas A & M University Research Foundation, regarding abnormally high mortality rates in oyster beds harvested by Louisiana oystermen. One of at least four major research projects initiated as a result of lawsuits filed in 1946 by Louisiana oystermen against major oil companies active in offshore drilling in the Gulf Mexico, Project 9 resulted in the identification and published description (1950) of a newly discovered parasite called . The lawsuits against the oil companies were subsequently dropped or settled out of court. Hopkins was a Texas A & M Professor Emeritus until his death in Nov. 1984. The collection consists of 17 reel to reel audio tape recordings of addresses delivered at a conference held at SIO in La Jolla to celebrate the opening of the Thomas Wayland Vaughan Aquarium-Museum and celebrating the 83rd Charter Day of the University of California. Recordings are 7 inch reel to reel tapes, run at 7 1/2 ips speed. Speakers include Roger Revelle, Claude ZoBell, Norris Rakestraw, B. B. Cox, A. Redfield, D. Merriman, Carl Eckart, Francis Shepard, Carl Leavitt Hubbs, Detlev Bronk and others. A rough transcript was made from the tape. The tapes are audible, but in poor condition. Some have breaks and include loud background noises.

The biographical files is an artificial collection created by SIO Archivist Elizabeth Shor in 1978. The collection contains manuscript and archival material from many different sources filed under the names of individuals who generated, received and/or were the subject of correspondence, memoranda and notes. The collection also includes biographical information and bibliographies on some individuals. The collection includes significant amounts of material by and/or about Winfred Emory Allen, Fred Baker, Wesley Clarence Crandall, Carl Henry Eckart, Richard Howell Fleming, Albert Haldane Gee, Tillie Genter, Peter G. Hale, Jacob Chandler Harper, George Francis McEwen, Erik Gustaf Moberg, Arthur Dehon Raff, Helen Hill Raitt, Philip Rudnick, Edward Willis Scripps, Ellen Browning Scripps and other members of the Scripps Family, Francis Bertody Sumner, Eldon Marion Thorp, Chʻeng-kʻuei Tseng, Victor Vacquier, Julius Wangenheim and Claude Ephraim ZoBell. These files include papers and records essential to an understanding of the history of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography especially during the pre-war period. The files were closed in 1981 with no further additions.

The accession consists of 21 glass mounted color 35mm slides taken by Eldon Marion Thorp in 1938 at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The slides include portraits of Scripps faculty and staff including Percy Barnhart, Easter Cupp, Richard H. Fleming, Denis Fox, Carl Johnson, Martin Johnson, George F. McEwen, Erik Moberg, Eric Ogden, Roger Revelle, Marston Sargent, B.T. Schneer, Francis Sumner, Harald Sverdrup, Eldon Thorp, W.F. Whedon, R.T. Young and Claude ZoBell. The accession also includes two photographs of SIO facilities. One is a photograph of the grounds of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography east of the library. The other is of the San Diego Yacht Harbor where Scripps vessels were moored.
