With stampless cover on conjugate leaf.--Will arrive in Leominster in time for the meeting; will someone meet him at train station in Taunton. [5] 1851, Aug. 21 ? recognizes risk he runs in publishing this opinion; asks for some nursery trees of the Northern Spy apple. [6] 1851, Dec. 30, to H. M. Cornell. With conjugate blank leaf.--Intended to give poem to Cornell's association, but an editor pirated poem and published greater part of it; doubtful whether he can now send poem to Cornell. [7] 1853, April 29, to Robert Carter. With conjugate blank leaf.--Cannot write a song or speak at dinner for John Parker Hale; doubts whether he can attend. [8] 1857, Feb. 17, Williamsburgh, N.Y., to Charles D. Cleveland.--Concerning choice of his prose writings to go into a collection proposed by Cleveland. [9] ca.1858, to Charles D. Cleveland.--Acknowledging his letter of March 20th. Wishes correction made on p.408 if it still may be done.

Rauch, John. Receipts on dying, 1815-1817.

Handwritten copy of most of John Rauch's "Receipts on Dyeing, A Series of Letters to a Friend Containing Correct and Exact Copies of all his Best Receipts on Dyeing Cotton & Wollen Goods, Obtained and Improved by Him during Twelve Years of Practice at Different Manufactories in Switzerland, France, Germany & America: Also a True Description of his Invented Substitute for Woad, Being a Cheap and Preferable Material, and Produce of this Country..." Rauch's treatise was originally published in New Haven, Ct. and New York City in 1815. This copy contains 64 of the letters detailing the production of commercial dyes for a number of colors used in the production of wool and cotton fabrics as well as yarn. One of the recipes requires 16 days to complete. The recipes pertaining to woad are excluded from this version, which was copied by William Pierpont II of Burlington who signed one page with the date March 25, 1817. The letter that was supposed to describe the secret substitute for woad never appeared in the published version of Rauch's work. Instead, it was sent to those interested on request and upon the collection of a large sum of money. It is apparent that Pierpont was interested as the manuscript contains a copy of the letter with the secret revealed.

Terry family. Terry family papers, 1795-1939 (inclusive).

Title: Terry family papers, 1795-1939 (inclusive).

Papers of five family members, the children and daughter-in-law of Alfred and Clarissa Terry, make up the major part of the collection. The most prominent figure is Alfred Howe Terry, a Civil War general in the Union army, whose correspondence and military papers relate to the Fitz-John Porter case, the Indian campaigns (1870s) and reminiscences of military service and the Civil War. Included are orders for the court martial of General Custer and drawings supposedly given to Terry by Sitting Bull. Other family members include his brother, Adrian, who also served in the Civil War, and Adrian's wife, Isadore Wright Terry, whose correspondence includes letters from her husband during the war describing his experiences. The papers of Elizabeth Howe Terry include a diary (1875) kept on an ocean voyage to Europe, while the papers of Harriet Wadsworth Terry, the second lady principal of Vassar College, are largely made up of family correspondence. Papers of other family members and memorabilia, including Civil War mementos and a prescription for the cure of cholera make up the remainder of the papers.

Contains materials from the Boardman, Crosby, McGlenen and Pierpont families ranging in date from 1811 to 1941. The collection consists of clippings, letters, genealogical notes, manuscript poems and journal entries, printed material, receipts, and a family record book. Of note are items once belonging to John Pierpont, Jr. and William Alston Pierpont, both sons of Rev. John Pierpont, including account books, catalogues of books, a journal, a scrapbook, and a theological school notebook. The remainder of this small collection documents the efforts made by various family members to record the history of the Pierpont family through memoirs and genealogies.
