In addition, there is a history section relating to research done by Mr. Carter on the famous Allen family of Vermont, especially Ethan and his brothers Heman, Heber, and Ira.

The bulk of this collection of papers consists of correspondence, 1823-1845, to Samuel Larned, most of which was generated while he served as Secretary of the U.S. Legation and Chargé d'Affaires at Santiago, Chile and Lima, Peru from 1823-1837. The correspondence concerns the political, military, economic and maritime affairs of Chile and Peru and their relationship to U.S. foreign policy. Although several of the letters are written in Spanish, most of the correspondence is from American diplomatic colleagues living at various places in South America, including Santiago, Valparaiso and Lima. There is also correspondence pertaining to Larned's financial investments in Chile and Peru as well as correspondence from several family members in Providence. Some of the major correspondents are Heman Allen (1779-1852), Charles Bispham (1798-1882), John Cryder ( - ), John Davidson ( - ), Henry Seymour Fearing (1800-1829), William Henry Folger (1803-1868), John Murray Forbes (1771-1831), Michael Hogan ( - ), Horatio Jerauld ( - ), Samuel Lang ( - ), and William Tudor (1779-1830). The correspondence also includes drafts and copies of official notes and dispatches, 1823-1837, written by Samuel Larned in South America. The collection also includes family correspondence, deeds and other papers, 1753-1839, of John Larned; a ledger, 1823-1827, of Stephen Learned concerning a sawmill business; a ledger, 1826-1829, of Ebenezer Learned concerning the sale and carting of wood, goods and produce; and a diary, 1859, of Elizabeth Rand Learned recording daily activity and the weather.

Allen, Ethan, 1738-1789. Papers, 1753-1789. [microform].

A small collection of seven folders, the papers of Ethan Allen are a mixture of receipts, bonds, deeds, and correspondence that range in years from 1753 to 1789. Evidenced in Allen's letters are his strong anti-New York sentiments as well as his Deist philosophies. Included in the collection is an interesting letter to Ethan Allen from Ethan Nomatterwho, Philanthropos, who responds (negatively) to Allen's "The Spirit of God." Interestingly enough, the piece appears to be written by Allen himself though its origin is a mystery. There are a few letters to and from Ethan's brothers Levi and Heman and to Stephen R. Bradley to whom Allen voices his philosophies. There are a few transcribed letters including one from St. John de Crevecoeur who writes to Allen suggesting names for Vermont towns.

The papers contain four letters, 1810-1824, from Tyler regarding various legal matters: the divorce case of Rebecah Perry vs. Daniel Perry, particularly the proposed decree of alimony; the potential miscarriage of justice when parties fail to transact business at the proper time; and the economic advantage of transporting more than one prisoner at a time; some public matters: the New Hampshire elections, particularly the gain in votes for [Jeremiah?] Smith; the re-election of James Madison; and Tyler's request that Van Ness meet with Colonel Harrington to consider the qualifications of John Johnson, Clerk of County Court, for appointment as Master of Chancery for the County of Burlington, Vermont, recommended by Judge [Heman] Allen; and several personal matters: a request that Merrill have Captain [Moses] Robinson return the first volume of Tyler's reports, published as "Reports of cases argued and determined in the Supreme Court of Judicature of Vermont 1800 to 1803"; and instructions, on behalf of Mrs. Tyler for Griffith to fill out forms for a bond and mortgage. They also contain a letter, 1787 March 6, to Tyler from James Bowdoin instructing Tyler to go to New York City to seek help from Gov. George Clinton and the State of New York in apprehending members of Shays' Rebellion. The correspondents include James Bowdoin, William Griffith, Jonathan Jones, Orsamus Cook Merrill, and Cornelius Peter Van Ness. There is also a document, 1808 February 22, concerning a writ of error for a debt of Samuel Purdy of Manchester.
