Shelby Stephenson (1938- ) is a poet; professor of literature and creative writing at Campbell College (now University), Buies Creek, N.C., 1974-1978, and at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (formerly Pembroke State University) after 1978; and editor of beginning in 1979. Pembroke Magazine The collection includes personal and professional correspondence of Shelby Stephenson; files relating to " , North Carolina arts organizations, and Stephenson's academic career; and many writings by Stephenson, both poetry and prose. Included is correspondence with local, national, and international poets, novelists, editors, and publishers, including A. R. Ammons, Fred Chappell, Norman Macleod, Guy Owen, and Paul Green. The Gary Snyder Papers document the personal and professional activities of Gary Snyder (1930- ), poet, essayist, translator, Zen Buddhist, environmentalist, lecturer, and teacher. Snyder is considered one of the most significant environmental writers of the twentieth century and a central figure in environmental activism. He wrote more than twenty books of poetry and prose including his forty-year work and for which he won the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. The collection spans the years 1910-2003 (1945-2002 bulk) and continues to grow. Drafts as well as final versions of poems and prose pieces are found in the collection along with correspondence, recordings of poetry readings and interviews, subject files, manuscripts and publications by other authors, serials, ephemera, and memorabilia. The collection includes correspondence and other materials, some relating to Swansea's relationship with poet Ezra Pound. Letters, most written in 1955, chiefly concern daily activities, mutual acquaintances, and, to a lesser extent, literary matters. In 1946, Ezra Pound was declared mentally unfit to stand trial for treason and was committed to Saint Elizabeth's Hospital, Washington, D.C., where he remained for 12 years. Other items include ideograms in Chinese characters made by Pound for Swansea, writings by Swansea and others, printed material about Pound, and other items. Also included are editorial and other correspondence, editorial notes, business records, publicity material, manuscripts and art work submitted for publication, mailing lists, and other items, 1963-1976, relating to the Red Clay Reader. Some of the authors represented in these materials appear as online catalog headings. Photographs include a few of Ezra Pound and several relating to the Red Clay Reader. The Addition of April 2008 includes Swansea's unpublished memoirs; a book authored by Swansea titled "Mindworks: How to Become a More Creative and Critical Thinker" (South Carolina ETV, 1990); a videotape of a speech given by Swansea at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C.; and a DVD collection of documentaries by Ross McElwee in which Swansea appears.

Correspondence, creative works, printed material, photographs, and legal and legal-style documentation, created and maintained by Paul Foreman in his capacity as editor of Thorp Springs Press, document Foreman's literary publishing activities and, to a lesser extent, his personal interests and the lives of members of his family. Creative works dominate the records of Thorp Springs Press and include book-length drafts, typescripts, and page proofs. Manuscripts representthe work of Jon Bracker, Mark Chain, Morton Grinker, Judy Hogan, James Hoggard, Worden McDonald, Sheila Nickerson, Thomas Parkinson, Thomas Zigal, and others. Roughly half of the manuscripts remain unpublished. Letters from authors accompanying and commenting upon many of the manuscripts can be found in the author files, which also include revisions, works-in-progress, clippings, broadsides, a few contracts and photographs, and a small number of letters from other publishers, editors, and printers. Frequent correspondents were Joseph Bruchac, Gene Fowler, Len Fulton, Judy Hogan, Gene Nelson, and Sheila Nickerson. Subject files consist of materials regarding small presses and other topics peripherally related to the operation of Thorp Springs Press. The Foreman Family materials include clippings, creative works, and magazines reflecting Foreman's personal interests. Letters include a 1919 letter from Foreman's great-great aunt tracing their family lineage as well as routine letters from his parents and siblings. A file of correspondence and court records relating to the arrest of Foreman's brother, Donald, in 1976 is also included.

Charleen Whisnant Swansea (b. 1933) graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1956 with an M.A. in Modern Poetry. In summer 1956, she married the architect Murray Whisnant. She taught English at UNC for one year before moving back to Charlotte, where she taught at Queens College until 1964. In 1964, Swansea founded , an annual magazine that published the work of southern authors and artists. She edited the magazine until 1970.
