The Department of Dramatic Art was established in 1936. Prior to that, instruction in the history of theater and comparative drama was given in the Department of English. In addition to its academic instruction, the new department produced plays and supported dramatic efforts. The Carolina PlayMakers, founded in 1918, became its production unit. In1980, the Carolina PlayMakers was reorganized as the PlayMakers Repertory Company, a semi-professional theatrical company. Subsequently, the Laboratory Theater, which formed about 1971, assumed the production of student plays in the department. The Carolina Dramatic Association, begun in 1922, was a cooperative program of the Department of Dramatic Art and the University Extension Division's Bureau of Community Drama. The Institute of Outdoor Drama was founded in 1963 as an affiliate of the department; its purpose was to promote the production of outdoor drama in the United States. Records include correspondence and other files relating to the administration of the Department of Dramatic Art and its various units and affiliates. The majority of the records relate to the production of plays by the Carolina PlayMakers and the Laboratory Theater. More than half of these are scripts for PlayMakers' productions.

Title: Virginia Ferguson collection 1910-1914.

Collection of photographs and newspaper clippings concerning marine aviation and underwater photography. Subjects covered include Eugene Ely, Curtiss Aircraft and the historic November 14, 1910, first ship-to-shore flight, which Ely made from the USS Birmingham while docked in Hampton Roads, Va. Also in the collection are photographs of the wreck site of a blockade runner in the Bahamas taken by John Ernest Williamson, the first successful underwater photographer.

Title: Gladys Tilden Papers, 1875-1982

The collection contains personal (including family) and professional correspondence regarding fashion activities, her employment with the architect Richard Joseph Neatra and the California Youth Authority, and research on her father, Douglas Tilden, and Eliza Woodson Farnham. Also included are poetry, fictional writings, an unpublished autobiography, an a variety of personal memorabilia.
