[Letter] 1858 April 12, Greenville to [James Albert Broadus] / James P. Boyce. 1858.
Asked Broadus to return his report as quickly as possible, because "Bro. As soon as [Basil] Manly can send his, let me have them printed and a copy sent to Williams and Winkler" so they could raise any objections they wish.

Title:
[Letter] 1858 May 10, Washington, D.C. to [John Albert Broadus] / G.W. Samson. 1858.
Broadus had asked Samson's advice concerning a possible successor for his pastorate at Charlottesville (Va.) Baptist Church should he accept a professorship in the newly organized Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Samson suggested "I think that either Prof. A.J. [Adoniram Judson] Huntington, our collegue, or Rev. J.R. [Jacob Richardson] Scott, now of Rochester, N.Y. might be obtained." Told Broadus that he had just written to "Bro. [James P.] Boyce recommending a visit here after the June meetings." Broadus served the church until 1859. He was succeeded by Abram Burwell Brown.

Poindexter, [James B.] Taylor, and William F. Broaddus had been selected to "settle the difficulty between Tinsley and Farrish ... I would suggest that we shall need a perfectly private room, so secluded that outsiders cannot hear what is spoken loud enough for me to hear." Concerning efforts to raise funds for the newly formed Southern Baptist Theological Seminary: "Boyce goes up Saturday. Be sure to get him a good subscription in C[harlottesville]."

[Letter] 1875 Dec. 6, Louisville, Ky. to Bro. [John A.] Broadus / James P. Boyce. 1876.
Boyce opposed [A.J.A.] Jaeger as professor on numerous grounds. He saw him as imprudent, "not thoroughly sound", and a constant source of dissent. "The truth is that I have looked at times to Jaeger as one possible librarian and yet have feared that in these many particulars he would give us little usefulness. I do not know any measure that could do more harm. ... As to what Jaeger can do. Why can he not teach a school, give lessons in German, give lectures at academies and schools? But above all I cannot see why he cannot preach."

[Letter] 1859 Sept 7, Greenville, S.C. to [John Albert Broadus] / James P. Boyce. 1859.
In preparation for the opening of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary on Oct. 3, 1859, Boyce wrote that they had ordered books "chiefly from Smith English & Co., Philadelphia. We have divided the text book list, however, so as to send to Sheldon & Co. for a part of the works. I enclose you a rough list used in jotting down. I have directed Smith English & Co. to wait three to five days for a letter from you so that you may add what you think best. We have ordered nothing except for the use of students thus far. When we get these works and get together, we can then order for ourselves but we shall not have much to do it with. Manly and Williams are here and settled."

[Letter] 1877 Jan. 29, Louisville, Ky. to Bro. [John A.] Broadus, Greenville, S.C. / James P. Boyce. 1877.
Boyce was grieved by the news he heard from [William] Williams. "I am in favor of the board [Southern Baptist Theological Seminary] making him emeritius professor and paying salary for life, or for one year. I hope the Seminary will be able to do this hereafter." "I should wish to put Williams beyond reach of dependence upon others." He had begun to consider who to hire to replace Williams in a year or two. "We can get Manly, if we are able to give full salary. Another idea I have had which may bear fruits, is to have partial professorships and let the pastors (not the present ones) of Louisville fill them." [Williams died of consumption, Feb. 20, 1877 at Aiken, S.C.].

[Letter] 1857 July 2, Richmond to [John Albert Broadus] / J.B. Jeter. 1857.
Wrote his critical opinion of an address Broadus had written: "It is the language of a student, and admirably suited to a theological or advanced Bible class. Unfortunately but few of our church members have the judgment and taste to appreciate, and the time and patience to adopt your suggestions." He closed with the information: "Manly mentioned to me that Boyce desired the committee to prepare the plan of the Theo. Sem. to meet in Greenville. If anything worthy of the cause is to be done, the committee should have a meeting, and take full time for deliberation. As a man should not go to war at his own charges, if you and Manly should go before the convention, I will aid in securing the "sinews of war." ["Endless money forms the sinews of war." Answers Broadus' inquiry about the "[William] Williams draft." Says Williams writes him "cheerfully, saying he is doing well, getting stronger, hopes to do service yet, etc." Williams died of consumption, "induced by overwork in the Seminary," Feb. 20, 1877 at Aiken, S.C. Also asks if Broadus has "touched up Jeter's dream. Please do so."

Wrote Broadus concerning arrangements for a public meeting to raise endowment funding and interest in the newly organized Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. "I will be in Charlottesville on Saturday--and I wish to carry off the plan while there." He asked Broadus to arrange accommodations for "My wife and child and myself." On Monday night, Boyce and Broadus would meet at Bro. [William P.] Farrish's residence. He proposed Wednesday night for the public meeting, "and the brethren say you must be here if possible and make a speech."

Boyce wrote about efforts to collect pledges owed the Seminary by various individuals and institutions. He reported that "[William] Williams was looking better than I hoped, but I saw full reason to fear that all that can be done is to protract his life which at best can only last a year or two." He wrote about the Centennial celebration: "I feel very frank in saying that the two institutions ought to pay the expenses. If Judson and Furman will take for their half of the uncollected balance a lien on their university, you and Toy can get yours from the Seminary." He wanted that taken care of before the Seminary board met, because having the unpaid bill would "hurt our appeal for bonds."

[Letter] 1877 Feb. 9, Louisville to Bro. [John A.] Broadus / James P. Boyce. 1877.
Boyce wants to have a talk with Broadus, perhaps at Rochester, if Broadus cannot easily come to Louisville. Asks "Had we not better bring the Seminary to Louisville next fall and with only three professors: you, Toy, and myself. The new trustees under the new charter have to reelect. If they decide to elect three (3) only, upon the ground, that we must come, and that we must come most economically and therefore could only have three moved, would that not do? The only trouble is Williams. We must have some provision for him-- as to my scheme about additional professors, I meant professors teaching the whole term, not outside lecturers. What day would be best for me to be with you. Sunday or what? Any day would suit me. I shall only stay one. I would like to hear one lecture while there."

Boyce was planning for Southern Baptist Theological Seminary's 1877-78 session. "Bro. Kerfoot is willing to be guided by our absolute decision that he must go; but he is of decided opinion that his duty is to stay out one year longer at least and really two." He asks Broadus to consult with Toy, "and perhaps also Whitsitt and decide. If you are not fully decided anyhow to take Kerfoot, it would be best to have a talk with Reynolds and Furman.... The money seems to be all stopped. I shall have to make furthur public appeal for money for professors' salaries of July. At present I have nothing." Boyce has a letter from Williams asking for two hundred dollars. He will try to arrange for it, but he sees "at present no chance for paying others, yet there is a large amount due on salary account from local givers."

Wrote reluctantly, concerning professorship of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary: "With much difficulty, and much distress, I have at length reached a decision. I tremble at the the responsibility of the thing either way and hesitate to write words which must be irrevocable. But if elected, I am willing to go. I feel some natural delicacy about having it known that I am willing when it is not certain that the great Board of Trustees will elect me. I learned, in confidence that a scheme was on foot for keeping Manly in Richmond. Come, that we may conteract it. Will there be any money now for the library? I lack many books which will be almost indispensable in the beginning. Will the Furman Univ. let us have the theological part of their library?"
