Lacy discusses his early research while in medical school and during post-doctoral training at the Mayo Clinic, which led to his interest in studying the islets of Langerhans and in the transplantation of islets as a cure for diabetes. Lacy also discusses his responsibilities as chairman of the WUSM Department of Pathology and the conflict between Barnes Hospital and WUSM in the early 1960s. Colleagues, such as Edward Dempsey and Stanley Hartroft, are discussed, as well as many other scientists whose research influenced Lacy's work.

Throughout the interviews, King talks about the role of the Executive Faculty and colleagues such as Carl Cori, Oliver Lowry, and Carl Moore. In the 1st interview: King discusses the dispute between the Washington University School of Medicine (and its dean, Edward Dempsey) and Barnes Hospital (and its chairman, Edgar M. Queeny) in the early 1960s. After Dempsey's abrupt departure to a position in Washington, D.C., King became the acting dean of the medical school in 1964 and then dean the following year. 2nd interview: King discusses the WUSM under vice chancellor for medical affairs William H. Danforth, from 1965-71. 3rd interview: King discusses student unrest at Washington University during the Vietnam War and racial unrest at the medical school in the late 1960s. He also discusses Sam Guze, who succeeded Danforth as vice chancellor for medical affairs. 4th - 9th interviews: King discusses his recruitment of department heads, such as Roy Vagelos, Philip R. Dodge, David Kipnis, William Landau, Samuel Guze, and Philip Needleman, during his tenure as dean.

This collection consists of material mostly from the year 1964, which was the year when the dispute between the medical school and Edgar M. Queeny, speaking for the Barnes Hospital Trustees, reached a point when there was practically no area of the joint operation on which the two institutions could agree. Material regarding Carl V. Moore's appointment as the first Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs is included, as well as correspondence from M. Kenton King, Dr. Dempsey's successor as Dean. The text of Dr. Dempsey's resignation as Dean, his curriculum vitae and his obituary from 1975 are also included in the papers.

Trotter discusses her interest in anatomy and the events leading her to joining the faculty of the Washington University School of Medicine department of Anatomy. She recounts several events in the history of the department and its heads over the years, including Robert J. Terry, Edmund V. Cowdry, and Edward Dempsey. Trotter describes serving as an anthropologist in Hawaii identifying skeletal remains after the Second World War, changes in the study and teaching of anatomy, and teaching for a year at Makerere University College in Kampala, Uganda. She also discusses changes in the Washington University School of Medicine over the course of her career as well as sex discrimination in salaries and promotion at the university.

In the second interview Hecker discusses the organization and early years of the Washington University Medical School and Associated Hospitals, Inc. (WUMSAH), 1962-1964. Hecker also discusses the dispute between Edgar Queeny, chairman of the Trustees of Barnes Hospital, and the Washington University School of Medicine and its then-dean, Edward Dempsey.
