Immigration Arrival Investigation case file for Dr. Sun Yat-Sen
Title:
Immigration Arrival Investigation case file for Dr. Sun Yat-Sen
This is an immigration arrival investigation case file for Dr. Sun Yat Sen, first President of the Republic of China, known as "the Father of modern China." The first portion of the file documents Dr. Sun's successful arrival in the US, for a second fund-raising and speaking trip, "in disguise" as a native-born resident of Hawaii. The remainder of the case file contains information on post-1911 official Chinese and US government policies and attitudes toward Dr. Sun, and options considered by him, rather than confirmation of any subsequent US visits.

Reinsch, Paul Samuel, 1869-1923. Papers, 1835-1924, 1963.
Title:
Papers, 1835-1924, 1963.
Papers of Paul Samuel Reinsch, professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin, 1901-1913, and minister to China, 1913-1919. Some correspondence relates to his teaching career, but most of the papers concern his service in China as a United States diplomat and as legal and financial counselor to the Chinese government after his resignation as minister. Letters in 1920 discuss his unsuccessful campaign as the Democratic nominee for United States Senator from Wisconsin against the Republican candidate Irvine Lenroot. In content Reinsch's letters were frequently a combination of personal, professional, and diplomatic matters. Among his many correspondents were Jane Addams, Charles A. Beard, Edward A. Birge, William Jennings Bryan, Nicholas Murray Butler, Joseph E. Davies, Pierre S. Du Pont, Richard T. Ely, Elbert Gary, William C. Gorgas, Christian A. Herter, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Edward M. House, Paul O. Husting, Robert G. Ingersoll, David Starr Jordan, V. K. Wellington Koo, Robert M. La Follette, Robert Lansing, Irvine Lenroot, Jack London, Charles McCarthy, Francis McGovern, Emanuel Philipp, Theodore Roosevelt, Elihu Root, Edward A. Ross, John C. Spooner, Isaac Stephenson, Willard Straight, Sun Yat-sen, Ida M. Tarbell, Lowell Thomas, Charles R. Van Hise, William F. Vilas, Henry C. Wallace, Booker T. Washington, and Woodrow Wilson. Supplementing the correspondence are Reinsch's writings, including the manuscript for his book An American Diplomat in China (1922), copies of articles and addresses, 1902-1922, and drafts of classroom lectures written during his years as a professor. The collection also contains one diary written in 1906 by Mrs. Reinsch, and eight scrapbooks covering Reinsch's career to 1922. While Reinsch was minister to China, he acquired at Peking some records, 1835-1913, of the American Consulate (later Legation) in China for the years preceding his service. In addition Reinsch established his own files of Chinese materials spanning the period from 1878 to 1923. These include translations from Chinese newspapers, translations of the minutes of meetings of the National Council of the Republic of China, information on Chinese culture and on fiscal and legal policies, and newspaper clippings from English-language newspapers published in China. In 1963 the collection was studied intensively by one of Professor Reinsch's former students, Horatio B. Hawkins, and by his wife, Hildred Daisy Moser Hawkins, a sister of Mrs. Reinsch. During the period 1913-1919, Hawkins was also in China as an employee of the Imperial Maritime Customs, and for many years the two families had close associations. Mr. Hawkins wrote commentaries for many letters and documents in the collection, Mrs. Hawkins contributed excerpts from her diary in 1913 commenting on Dr. Reinsch's appointment as minister, and both participated in the making of sixteen reels of tape recordings containing their reminiscences of Reinsch.

The Young China INS Business Partnership File
Title:
The Young China INS Business Partnership File
This partnership file most notably includes Dr. Sun Yat-sen (the father of modern China and its first provisional president) as one of the listed owners. Chinese Partnership case files were originated during investigations to certify the status of many Chinese immigrants as "Merchants," an "Exempt Class" not subject to exclusion under the Chinese exclusion laws, along with students, teachers, government officials, and the families of those so exempted. To be classified by INS as a merchant, the applicant had to be certified after investigation as an owner or official partner with at least $1000 interest in a recognized mercantile firm, where he performed no "manual labor." The files include descriptions and interpretations of business activities, maps of some Chinatowns in California, lists of business partners, and photographs. They are a valuable source for social, ethnic, family, local, and business history, and often contain links to the larger series of archival immigration investigation case files. While the partnership list is generally partially focused on the book and stationary department of the The Young China, individuals within the file are also associated with The Young China newspaper (also know as the Young China Morning Post), which was started by the Tongmenghui movement and later associated with the Kuomintang after the overthrow of the Manchu dynasty. Individuals specifically associated with the newspaper are also listed in select cases on the partnership lists.

Title:
Paul Myron Wentworth Linebarger reminiscences 1937-1938.
The volume which forms this collection is a bound, carbon copy typescript entitled "China Smiles Through" dictated by Paul Myron Wentworth Linebarger. The articles within the typescript describe Linebarger's overseas work in recruiting members for Sun Yat-sen's party and his support of the revolutionary campaigns. He includes anecdotes of daily encounters with the Chinese people and meetings with Chiang Kai-shek, Eugene Chen, and other revolutionary leaders. The articles indicate Linebarger's impressions of American missionaries and journalists as well as his opinion of the unequal treaties which allowed foreigners immunity from Chinese law. Several news clippings are attached at the back of the typescript which note Linebarger's 1938 speeches in the United States.

Ford, Henry, 1863-1947. Engineering Laboratory Office records subgroup, 1920-1952.
Title:
Engineering Laboratory Office records subgroup, 1920-1952.
The Engineering Laboratory Office records subgroup is comprised of the following series: Business and Personal Correspondence series, 1920 (13.2 cubic ft.), Acc. 284; Business and Personal Correspondence Addendum series, 1920 (2.8 cubic ft.), Acc. 284; the In-House Subject and Name Filing System series, January-June, 1921 (7.6 cubic ft.), Acc. 285; Library Bureau Filing System series, July 1921-1929 (429.6 cubic ft. and 4 oversize boxes), Acc. 285; Amberg Filing System series, 1930-1949 (781.6 cubic ft.), Acc. 285; In-House Name File with Subjects Filing System series, 1950-1952 (14 cubic ft., 1 oversize box, and 1 oversize folder), Acc. 285. Basically, this subgroup contains an unbroken run of Henry Ford office correspondence from 1920 through 1952. During these years however, filing systems changed, which is reflected in the names of the series into which the subgroup has been broken. The finding aids for the collections contain detailed descriptions of the filing systems and how to access them. The Engineering Laboratory Office records subgroup is a remarkable collection of material that documents a period of more than thirty years of activity of one of the world's great industrialists and his company. The records are arranged by year and then alphabetically according to the filing system used during that year. Typically for each year files can be found for most domestic and foreign Ford Motor Company branches, including Highland Park and the Rouge plant, as well as most company departments such as accounting, advertising, auditing, disbursement, employment, chemical laboratory, chemical and metallurgical, engineering, medical, purchasing, sociological, service, the President's office, general sales, and traffic and for other ventures pursued by Henry Ford, especially those that were managed by his secretary E.G. Liebold, such as Henry Ford Hospital, Dearborn Publishing Company, Dearborn State Bank, Detroit, Toledo and Ironton Railroad and Dearborn Realty and Construction Company. Additional subjects that have multiple folders through the years include antiques, Dearborn Water Works, Dearborn Inn, Dearborn Country Club, Berry Schools, Edison Institute, Boreham House Estate, Michigan Bell Telephone Company, Michigan Central Railroad Company, Michigan Public Utilities Commission, Henry Ford Flour Mill, Henry Ford and Son, Lincoln Motor Company, Lincoln and Lincoln-Mercury Divisions, Botsford Inn, Wayside Inn, Michigan Iron Land and Lumber Company, Hamilton and Rossville Hydraulic Company, Henry Ford's yacht Sialia, Firestone Tire and Rubber Company and various Village Industries. Also included in the collection is material about the Edison Botanic Research Corporation, a corporation formed by Henry Ford and Firestone in 1927 to research sources of domestic rubber, based out of Thomas Edison's Fort Myers Laboratory. Accident reports and insurance information from the firms Lucking, Helfman, Lucking and Hanlon; Kelly, Halla, Peacock and Hughes and Johnson and Higgins are found in multiple years as well. Individuals with multiple folders include Henry, Edsel and Clara Ford, newspaper editor Arthur Brisbane, Jens Jensen, Herbert Hoover, Ford real estate agent William T. Gregory, John Burroughs, G.K. Chesterton, Calvin Coolidge, Thomas Edison, Sialia captain Perry T. Stakes, Harvey Firestone, Albert Kahn, and missionary Joseph Bailie. There is one letter from Chinese revolutionary Sun Yat-Sen inviting Henry Ford to expand automobile industry work in China. The records also include hundreds of thousands of letters from individuals asking Henry Ford for financial assistance, employment, donation of a vehicle, wanting to donate or sell something to him for his museum, providing opinions on Ford products, or opinions on projects and ventures Henry Ford was involved with or supporting; the letters offer insight into the social conditions of the period. While there is no way to access this particular material by subject, as it is filed by the last name of the correspondent, almost any box in the collection contains these types of letters. The records are worth checking if the name of an individual or subject is known as well as a general time period. Office staff and later archivists handling the collection have provided extensive cross-reference sheets in the boxes to aid in subject access.
