Informs Vernon and Company that his ship is at Four Mile Creek in Virginia loaded with 1200 bushels of wheat waiting for the wind to subside to take on more wheat. Notes he has sold sugar and gives price. Gives price of wheat and mentions that two large ships bound for Lisbon are now taking on wheat on the James River. Comments on the effect this will have on prices.

Extracts from the journal of captain Samuel Tucker, kept on board the frigate Boston from 11 Feb - 6 Nov. 1778. Passengers on the frigate included John Adams, who was on his way to his first diplomatic mission in France. A copy of a letter to Samuel Tucker from William Vernon and James Warren explains Adams's presence on the ship. Tucker's journal entries describe the voyage to France and the return trip to Boston, including the weather, sailing conditions, the crew's activities, and ships captured and held as prizes by Tucker and his crew. The journal also includes a list of men who served aboard the frigate. This copy was created by Samuel Tucker. Original journal held by the Houghton Library, Harvard University.

Consisting of letter, 6 Feb. 1747, thanking Vernon "for the trouble you take in my affairs" and providing a list of current prices in the Charleston market. Letter, 10 Nov. 1747, acknowledging impact of the War of the Austrian Succession on trade in the North American colonies, explaining that business had declined since Vernon's departure, attributing the slump to "the high price of our produce, & by our Coast being so often visited by the Enemy's Privateers, (& no Vessel here to protect us)," and listing current prices.

1) A receipt for tallow and candles bought by William Vernon from Isaac Elizer, a member of the Newport synagogue, Yeshuat Israel (Touro), in 1774; 2) an autographed note by Aaron Lopez, also a member of Yeshuat Israel, directing William Vernon to deliver bills of exchange to the note's bearer; 3) a printed deed from Solomon Lyons, Philadelphia, 1772, for 500 acres to Aaron Levy, signed by Joseph Henry and John Wallington; 4) receipt for money received for the heirs of Jacob Rodriguez Rivera, signed by Moses Seixas in Newport, 1789.

He expects that Captain Tanner will set sail by the 18th with a cargo of lumber, rice, and pork. A postscript lists prices current for molasses, rice, rum, and other goods.

Manuscript accounts for trade rum, provisions and other supplies shipped on a voyage of the brigantine Renard, owned by the slave trader William Vernon. It sailed with 7,159 gallons of rum in early 1762 and traded, during this portion of its voyage, for cargo including molasses, sugar, pine and cedar planks, and several slaves.

Title: Letter to William Vernon : Newport, 20 July 1785.

Samuel Vernon was William Vernon's brother. The family was a successful Rhode Island trading firm in the eighteenth century involved in the commercial triangle trade. In this letter Samuel describes the cargo of one of their ships: "... he had about seventy negroes on board and a large qty. of gold ... and supposes he would leave the coast [Africa] about the middle of April ..." By 1785 Charlestown, South Carolina was the only place in the United States open to the slave trade.

The material in this collection records imports, exports, and orders of goods generated and/or received by the Vernons. Such products as rum,sugar, molasses, wine, cheese, indigo, nails, glass bottles and flasks, wigs, cotton, cloth, candles, flour, chocolate, coffee, dry goods, and kitchenware are represented. Import fees and percentages received by commission merchants are often recorded. Letters detail such facets of trade as problems with credit, payments lost in the mail, spoilage of food products, and transportation of goods. Other items in the collection document costs associated with operating ships and brigs. Some of the bills and receipts are for personal products needed by members of the Vernon family, including clothing, shoes, lighting equipment, a coffeepot, and items for the kitchen. There are two bills for schools attended by Vernon children.
