The collection centers on the Southern black education efforts of James Hardy Dillard. Contents include correspondence (1905-1935) of Dillard, his diaries and journals (1919-1926), speeches and articles. There is considerable material regarding the Negro Rural School Fund, the Phelps-Stokes Fund, Washington, D.C. (also known as the Anna T. Jeanes Fund), the John F. The series consists of records of the Board of Trustees of the John F. Slater Fund from 1882-1937. The records include the minutes of the meetings of the Board of Trustees dating from the fund's inception through 1937, when the Slater Fund merged with the Negro Rural School Fund, Inc. to form the Southern Education Foundation. The minutes include the reports of the General Agent, Treasurer's statements, lists of appropriations to schools, reports from schools that received money from the Slater Fund, and by-laws of the organization. Annual reports from the President of the Slater Fund to the Board of Trustees from 1932-1937 are also included in this series. The material in this series also includes a set of reports on a variety of subjects relating to education in the South, written mostly by members of the Board of Trustees. Financial records include correspondence with officers of banks and investment companies regarding the status of investments made by members of the Board of Trustees. Additional records include the minutes of the Educational Committee, a standing committee of the Board, from 1895-1913; correspondence to and from Wallace Buttrick (1903-1910), a former Secretary and Board member; and the correspondence and administrative records of George Dickerman, a Field Agent of the Slater Fund, from 1907-1916.

Correspondence, reports, minutes, scrapbooks, and other papers of the Southern Education Board and related organizations concerning the promotion of public education and also of agriculture and rural community in the South in the early twentieth century. The early papers concern the annual meetings of the Conference for Education in the South and the work of the Southern Education Board in supporting the development of rural schools and communities. After 1914, the records also include material on the reorganization of the Conference and Southern Education Board and the activities of related organizations, including the Southern Conference for Education and Industry, the Southern Educational Association, and the Southern Education Society. There are reports on a wide variety of subjects, including rural conditions, education, African Americans, women, community, and other subjects. Also included are the papers of George Sherwood Dickerman, which relate particularly to African American education, 1900-1910.

Papers of Jackson Davis, include correspondence, photographs and travel journals, and pertain chiefly to his travels and his work with the General Education Board and the Virginia State Board of Education. Papers from the General Education Board include Davis's 1946 address at the unveiling of a bust of Booker T. Washington at New York University; and statistical summaries on Alabama counties. Davis's diaries/travel journals, 1911, 1913, as state agent for Negro Schools for the Virginia State Board of Education describe his tours through Virginia visiting African American schools and colleges, and discuss the education of African-Americans. Among the schools discussed are Hampton Institute and Virginia Union University. Among the people mentioned are John Stewart Bryan, Wallace Buttrick, A.B. Chandler, Jr., Caroline Preston Davis, K.C. Davis, 1926, describing a European tour; the travel journal of Corrine M. Davis, 1935, describing a voyage to the Canary Islands, around the coast of Africa to Palestine and across the Mediterranean to Italy and France; and a letter fragment from Jackson Davis discussing parts of the voyage. With these is a genealogical chart of the Davis family given by Joseph T. Davis. There are also essays by Alan Gregg "Future in Europe," 1940, predicting political and economic outcomes of the Second World War, and "Statement on Social Medicine," 1943, advocating socialized medicine. The collection also contains letters of condolence on his death and clippings regarding him, chiefly obituaries.

Papers, 1816-1907, that belonged to Jabez L.M. Curry (1825-1903) consist of biographical material, letters, financial records, two manuscripts, printed material such as reports, minutes, pamphlets, and newspaper clippings as well as speeches, sermons, and background notes. However, one of the strengths of the collection lies with the letters written by the Peabody Education Fund's first general agent, Barnas Sears, to Robert C. Winthrop, 1867-1881. Also useful are the letters Curry received when he was general agent of the Peabody Education Fund. There is a particularly interesting group of letters to Curry from William H. Payne, Chancellor of the Peabody Normal College at the University of Nashville (Tenn.). Although most of the records in the Curry Family Papers document Jabez L. M. Curry's involvement as an agent for both the Peabody Education Fund and the John F. Slater Fund, 1881 to 1903, there are a few personal letters addressed to his wife, Mary, and his father, William. William Curry was a successful planter in Ga., and, later, in Talladega, Ala. to which the Curry family moved in 1838.
