Includes receipts for membership of the First Church of Boston, deeds for land in Boston, a catalog of books and estate inventories of Henry Dering, 1690-1730; bills of lading and receipts kept by Thomas Dering; and a letter sent to Thomas from George Whitefield, 1759. Also includes a collection of sermons possibly written by Eliphalet Adams, 1733, a list of foreign forces and vessels destroyed during the Revolution, 1776-80, and Dering family genealogical information compiled in 1898.

Henry Packer Dering (d. 1822) was a collector of customs, postmaster and military storekeeper in Sag Harbor, Long Island. He also traded at Aux Cayes, Haiti, as an agent of Nat Gardinier, during the 1780's. Collection consists of correspondence, diary, legal records, sermons, and other papers. Correspondence concerns family and business affairs, seafaring, United States Customs, and military stores; diary, 1787-1788, relates to sales at Aux Cayes, Haiti, of cargoes of fish and horses from the sloop Polly, of Sag Harbor, N.Y.; and deeds and other documents pertain to land on Long Island. Includes probated wills; a volume containing sermons, 1692-1694; cash accounts of contributions for preaching, 1791-1795; stud records, 1790, of the stallion Young Figure at Sag Harbor; and letters of Dering's father, Thomas Dering, and of his children and business associates. Also, drafts of eighteen letters, 1787, written from Aux Cayes, Haiti, while Dering was agent for Nat Gardinier, addressed to Gardinier and to relatives and friends in Sag Harbor concerning trade, local conditions, wages of ship captains while in port, and other topics.

Correspondence of the members of the Dering family with relatives, friends and business associates; correspondents include Thomas Dering, Henry P. Dering, Sarah F. Dering, Sylvester Dering, Frances Mary Sage, E. Sage, Eliza Gardiner Brumley, Lodowick Fosdick and Jonathan N. Havens. Items of note include letters of Thomas Dering in Boston from David Chesebrough of Newport, 1755-1769; letters of Henry P. Dering to Joseph Schofield of Connecticut about wool processing, 1817; and letters from Nicoll Richard Dering in San Francesco to his family in Sag Harbor, 1851-1853. Also an account book of Henry P. Dering at Yale College, 1780-1784; deed to H.P. Dering from Caleb Woodward for land in Sag Harbor, 1798; maritime papers including vessel shares, crew lists and seamen's papers for whaling ships including the Daniel Webster, Emerald and Columbia, 1845-1859; certificate of discharge from the U.S. Navy for George Grant of Sag Harbor, 1884; a Dering family genealogy; and notes by Edward M. Dering, Jr., 1950, about a family grandfather clock and a portrait fo Thomas Dering.
