A four-page payroll of employees of the O & R V Railway extension, dated January 1882, appears in the back of the volume. A copy of a January 23, 1878 memo from the Land Department of the Kansas Pacific Railway regarding rainfall in Kansas from 1873 to 1877 is affixed to the inside front cover, and a measurement conversion chart is affixed to the inside back cover.

This letterbook by William Jackson Palmer, treasurer of the Kansas Pacific Railroad, was created while surveying a southern route along the 35th parallel to the Pacific for the Kansas Pacific line, Union Pacific Railroad, Eastern Division from Colorado and New Mexico. This volume contains 229 pages of handwritten copies of outgoing and incoming correspondence dated August 5, 1867 to October 7, 1867, a two-page index, and a botanical specimen laid in. Many letters are to John D. Perry, President of Kansas Pacific Railroad. Also included are notes regarding distances, routes and geology. Palmer and his secretary, W.F. Colton, in whose hand these letters are probably written, left Trinidad, Colorado, August 7, and spent August through October covering the territory from the Raton passes through the Red River Valley to Ft. Union, Las Vegas, Santa Fe, Albuquerque and down the Rio Grande to Ft. Craig.

The Anderson Family Collection contains five document boxes of correspondence, diaries, documents, and manuscripts of the four Anderson men. John Anderson's papers are primarily concerned with his ministry although some family material is included. John Byars Anderson's most noteworthy papers are concerned with his railroad activities. Papers pertaining to his involvement in Civil War railroad matters are included. Much of his collection pertains to the financing and construction of the Union Pacific Railway, Eastern Division, being built across Kansas. This later became the Kansas Pacific Railway. Another part of John Byars' collection is letters from 1899 written by Andrew Carnegie to Mrs. Anderson. Carnegie was grateful because John Byars had given him access to his personal library. William Anderson's collection deals with his life as a minister. John A. Anderson's papers deal with his pastorate in California, his Civil War experiences as a chaplain, and his presidency of Kansas State Agricultural College. Very few papers cover his Congressional career or his service as Consul General.

Lamborn concern their friendship, briefly discuss Palmer's work with the Pennsylvania Railroad, and describe the formation of the Anderson Cavalry Troop. Palmer was taken prisoner following the Battle of Antietam; later letters to Charles B.
