Biographical History
Incorporated in 1914 under the state laws of Oregon, the company constructed and operated steamship and dockage facilities in the Columbia River and the Pacific Coast. It also operated two ocean-going steamships ("Great Northern" and "Northern Pacific"), which traveled from Flavel, Ore., to San Francisco, Calif., and to the Hawaiian Islands. All property and assets were conveyed to the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway Company in 1921. The charter was allowed to lapse in 1933.
The company was incorporated in 1914 as a subsidiary of the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway, a joint tenancy of Great Northern and Northern Pacific. It purchased two 4,000-ton steamships which it operated between San Francisco and Astoria until 1917. In that year the ships were commandeered by the U.S. government, which eventually purchased them from the company. The company's docks and other property, as well as its debts, reverted to the SP&S. Its charter was permitted to lapse in 1933.
