Biographical History
Rear Admiral James W. Davis, a 1930 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, began his military career aboard the USS Wyoming and USS Pennsylvania. After additional training in mechanical engineering, Davis was assigned to submarine duty and subsequently commanded two submarines in the Pacific during World War II. After World War II, Davis held seven more command positions and various administrative positions, including deputy director, Joint Staff, for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as naval deputy for the NATO Defense College. He retired from the Navy in 1965.
James White Davis was born October 12, 1906, in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. He received his commission as Ensign in the U.S. Navy in 1930, and advanced through ranks to rear admiral on May 1, 1958. He served as commander of the U.S. Naval Base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, from December 1962 to December 1963.
