Biographical History
In 1975, the Newberry Library Conservation Section was created as a part of the newly formed Conservation Department.
The Section assumed responsibility for paper and leather conservation and fine binding, which had been incorporated in the Library program with the hiring of Paul Banks in 1964, and which had been placed in 1970 under Banks in the Conservation Laboratory. In 1992, the Conservation Section was enlarged to include the Conservation Laboratory and the new Collections Conservation Studio, which dealt with collection level housing and maintenance issues.
The Conservation Laboratory was created in 1970 by conservator Paul Banks following the breakup of the Technical Department, which from 1965 to 1970 included conservation activities. The Laboratory was responsible for paper and leather conservation and restoration and fine binding.
In 1975 the Conservation Laboratory became part of the Conservation Section of the newly formed Conservation Department.
