When Mexican and Civil War soldiers mustered out of service, many regiments turned their flags over to the state of Ohio. The General Assembly authorized the purchase of glass cases to display battle flags in the Statehouse. The battle flag collection increased as flags from the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II were deposited. By the 1960s the flags were in poor condition. A committee to oversee the restoration of the flags was formed. Photographs were taken of the flags as part of the conservation process. Commercial artist Robert Needham painted illustrations of a large number of Civil War battle flags. In 1970 the flags and the audiovisual collection came to the Ohio Historical Center.
Thomas McFadden was a doctor in Westerville and a member of Otterbein College faculty when he enlisted as a surgeon for the 46th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, organized at Worthington, Ohio in October 1861 under Colonel Worthington. McFadden worked three days without sleep in the hospital at the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862 and was discharged in the summer of 1862. He reenlisted in 1863 and served as a surgeon at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio through 1864.
In the autumn of 1862, Kirby Smith's 6,850 Confederate soldiers threatened to reach the Ohio River. Governor David Tod called upon the citizens of the state to form militia companies to assist with protecting the border. The response brought almost 16,000 men and boys, who came wearing an assortment of different clothing and carrying hunting rifles. It was noted that they looked like squirrel hunters. Since the Confederate army did not reach the Ohio River, the troops were sent home. On March 11, 1863 the Ohio Senate and House of Representatives voted to honor the men with discharge papers in recognition of their patriotism.
