George Frideric Handel was an English composer of German birth. Handel's father wanted his son to study law, but was persuaded to allow him to study music. After training in Germany and Italy, he had some success with opera in England, eventually becoming a naturalized British citizen, sponsored by King George II. Handel is considered the finest composer of his time, not only for opera, but for numerous pieces in diverse forms, and for devising and perfecting the oratorio form. He was also instrumental in introducing opera to England, co-managing the King's Theatre with J. J. Heidegger for several years.

From the description of Accounts from the King's Theatre, Haymarket, for the seasons 1732-1733, circa 1733. (Pennsylvania State University Libraries). WorldCat record id: 60388281

George Frideric Handel was an English composer of German birth. Though consistently acknowledged as one of the greatest composers of his age, his reputation from his death to the early 20th century rested largely on the knowledge of a small number of orchestral works and oratorios, "Messiah" in particular. In fact, he contributed to every musical genre current in his time, both vocal and instrumental. The composition of operas, mainly on Italian librettos, dominated the earlier part of his career, and are the finest (though not the most typical) of their kind. In his later years his commitment to large-scale vocal works, usually with a strong dramatic element, found a more individual outlet in English oratorio, a genre that he invented and established. -- Oxford Music Online. (http://www.oxfordmusiconline.com:80/subscriber/article/grove/music/40060) Retrieved2/6/2009.

Handel's "Israel in Egypt" is unique among his oratorios in the way that the chorus takes the lead throughout. It was not a success at its premiere, probably because the audience found the music old-fashioned. And later ages have disapproved of it because Handel borrowed so much of the music from other composers - and from himself. But that need not trouble us. The important thing about the amazing "Hailstone Chorus" is not that it is based on a piece by Stradella; what matters is the way that Handel makes it completely his own with a new rushing orchestral accompaniment and those choral shouts of "fire." Evoking the various plagues sent against the Egyptians brought out all Handel's inventive powers. - Times Online (http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/article862462.ece) Retrieved 2/6/2009.
