Biographical History

Eleazar T. Fitch was Livingston Professor of Divinity at Yale from 1817 to 1852. His main duty was the supply of the Yale College pulpit. He was Lecturer on Homiletic at the Yale Divinity School from 1824 to 1861.

WorldCat record id: 702153513 1791 Jan 1 Born in New Haven 1810 B.A., Yale College 1812 Served briefly as Rector of Hopkins Grammar School. 1815 Graduated from Andover Theological Seminary, where he assisted Jeremiah Evarts in editing the Panopolist. 1817 Married Elizabeth Wooster, who died in 1821 1817 Returned to New Haven to serve as LivingstonProfessor of Divinity in Yale College, a position vacated by the death of President Timothy Dwight. 1822 Married Susan Root, who died in 1846 1822 Asked Yale administration to appoint an additional theological instructor, resulting in the organization of the Yale Divinity School for graduate theological study. 1822 1824 Acting Professor of Sacred Literature at Yale Divinity School 1824 1861 Lecturer on Homiletics at Yale Divinity School 1828 D.
