Myers was active in politics from a young age. He was instrumental in organizing the Young Republicans of Oregon and was an active member of the Republican Party. He served as assistant Secretary of State from 1965-1967 and as Secretary of State from 1967 to 1977. In 1977 he was elected State Treasurer and served in that post until his resignation in 1984.
