Biographical History

Louis Nicolas Vauquelin was the French chemist who discovered the elements beryllium and chromium, and isolated asparagine, the first amino acid to be identified.

French botanist René Louiche Desfontaines was appointed professor of botany at the Jardin des Plantes in 1786, and later became director of the Museum national d'histoire naturelle, president of the Academy of Sciences, and was elected to the Legion d'honneur.

Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu, French botanist, was professor of botany at the Jardin des Plantes from 1770 to 1826, and elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1788. He was notable as the first to propose a natural classification of flowering plants and much of his system remains in use today.

From the description of Letter of Louis Vauquelin, René Desfontaines and Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu written to Louis de Freycinet, Paris, 1816 Dec. 18 [manuscript]. [1816] (Libraries Australia). WorldCat record id: 704568564
