Biographical History

Anderson was born in Kincardine-on-Forth in 1780. From 1809 he was the Rector of Perth Academy where he advocated inclusion of chemistry and science in the curriculum. While there he supervised the construction of Perth Gasworks and was then requested by Perth Water Commissioners to design and construct a means of maintaining a clean water supply for Perth. The report was given by Anderson to the Commissioners in 1834 and published in 1837. In that year Anderson took up a position as Professor of Natural History at St Andrews University where he continued until his death in 1846. He was buried in Grayfriars Cemetery in Perth.

From the guide to the 'Report to the Commissioners for Supplying The City of Perth with Water, on the means employed for carrying into effect that measure', 1837, (University of Dundee)

Adam Anderson (1780-1846) was Rector of Perth Academy for 28 years from 1809, and then Professor of Natural History at St Andrews University, 1837-1846.

Waterford, Virginia was founded by Quakers who moved from Pennsylvania. Although Quakers did not believe in slavery, the Union Cemetery in Waterford laid out in the early nineteenth century was strictly segregated.

The "black section," located at the rear of the cemetery has some fine marble headstones, but many graves are marked with field stones. The wooden markers sometimes used have rotted away, leaving gaps in the rows of graves. Much of the cemetery has fallen into disrepair and many of the headstones (or footstones) have become almost unreadable. The graves of seven individuals not previously documented were found in section 1.

From the guide to the Black Section of Union Cemetery, Waterford, VA, 2003, (Thomas Balch Library)
