Anderson was born in Kincardine-on-Forth in 1780. From 1809 he was the Rector of Perth Academy where he advocated inclusion of chemistry and science in the curriculum. The report was given by Anderson to the Commissioners in 1834 and published in 1837. In that year Anderson took up a position as Professor of Natural History at St Andrews University where he continued until his death in 1846. He was buried in Grayfriars Cemetery in Perth.
