As a young man, Augustine Thomas Smyth added an "e" to his name. His daughter, Louisa Cheves Smythe (1868-1939), married Samuel Gaillard Stoney (1853-1926). Louisa McCord Smythe (1845-1928) served as president of the Charleston (S.C.) Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
