Biographical History

Matthew Teed was born in Devonshire, England on April 17, 1828 and early on received his apprenticeship in the carpenter's trade.

In 1849 Teed immigrated to America seeking his fortune in the California and later Colorado gold mines. After years of unsuccessful prospecting, he settled in Los Angeles during the mid-1860's and became engaged in building and contracting work. In later years, Teed was elected to the city council, served as park commissioner, and was one of the founders of the Pioneer Society in Los Angeles. He died on March 31, 1904.
