Biographical History
Lawyer, legislator, banker, farmer.
Republican representative from Florida, born in Pennsylvania. Served in the War Department on Special Duty on the Union side of the Civil War until he was relocated to Florida in 1865 to oversee the reconstruction of Florida. Admitted to the state bar in 1868 and served in the State Senate from 1869-1872. He was appointed by President Grant as Chairman of the Florida Commission in 1869 to negotiate the transfer of West Florida to Alabama, which failed. In 1878 he.
Retired to Pennsylvania to become an apple and peach grower. After 5 years he moved to Boston where he hoped for his wife and daughter to become some of the first women to receive suffrage, but disapointed in the slowness of the movement he moved back to Washington, D.C. in the late 1800s.
