Biographical History

Jonathan Holstein and Gail van der Hoof began collecting quilts in the 1960s. In 1971 they mounted an exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York entitled "Abstract Design in American Quilts", helping to fuel the quilt revival of the 20th century. Portions of Holstein's quilt collection and research were included in Ferrero Film's documentary, "A Legacy of Hearts and Hands". Holstein served as editor for The Quilt Journal and also authored articles and books on quilts and their history. Holstein donated his quilt collection and archival materials to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2003.
