Hussey was born on Oct. 13, 1897 in Milford, MA; fought in WWI; SB, Boston Univ., 1923; MA, Harvard Univ., 1928; Ph. D, UCLA, 1930; instructor in history, asst. professor (1930-35), assoc. professor (1935-45), from 1945, professor, UCLA; chairman of history dept. (1950, 1952-54); during WWII until 1947 he was asst. chief of the Office of American Republic Affairs, and divisional chief of the Office of Intelligence in the State Dept.; wrote articles and books on Latin American history, including Spanish reaction to foreign aggression in the Caribbean to about 1680 (1929) and The Caracas Company, 1728-1784 : a study in the history of Spanish monopolistic trade (1934); contributing editor, Handbook of Latin-American studies; editor, Hispanic-American Historical Review; he died on Oct. 28, 1959.
Roland Dennis Hussey (1887-1959) was born in Massachusetts, received his M.A. in history from Harvard University and his Ph.D. in history from UCLA. He was a longtime faculty member of the History Department at UCLA, ca. 1930-1954. His field was Latin American history. During World War II and the postwar years of 1942-1947, Hussey served the U.S. Department of State as Assistant Chief of the Office of American Republic Affairs, and as Divisional Chief of the Office of Intelligence. He was author of works such as "The Caracas Company, 1728-1784" (1934) and co-editor/translator of the "Documents on Inter-American Cooperation: 1810-1948", 2 vols. (1955). Hussey also was director for many years of the program to produce the multi-volume Handbook of Latin-American Studies, and was editor of and frequent contributor to the Hispanic-American Historical Review.
