Biographical History
Daniel Franklin Boone (1904-1989), lawyer and Army colonel, native of Winston-Salem, N.C., graduated 1931 from National University School of Law (L.L.B., L.L.M., M.P.L., J.D.); served in: Army National Guard, 1921-25; Army Reserve, 1925-1940; and was on general staff assignments in Washington, D.C., 1940-47; retired from Army in 1967 to open private law practice.
During World War II Boone served as liason officer for War Department in White House, briefed President Roosevelt on Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, and reviewed Japanese and German war atrocity cases with the War Crimes Branch of the War Department General Staff. In 1932, he married Martha Ferree Lightner (1911-1997), daughter of Clarence Ashley Lightner (1862-1938) and Frances McGraw (1870-1938) of Detroit, Mi., and Tryon, N.C.
Daniel, the son of Cornelius Alson Boone (1871-1936) and Louisa Davis Medearis (1872-1949), had two children with his wife, Martha: Daniel Lightner Boone (1935-1981) and Martha Penelope Boone (1938-1982). After their separation due to Martha's highly publicized adultery, the children sued their parents in an attempt to force a custody decision, the first case of its kind. In 1956, Daniel F. Boone married Helen Huffman; they retired to Myrtle Beach, S.C., in 1976.
