Biographical History

Richard Dickinson (1786-1840) was a son of a Master in the royal navy. He entered the royal navy himself in 1798, becoming lieutenant in 1806, commander in 1821, and captain in 1828. A court-martial was brought against him, instigated by Sir Edward Codrington, criticizing his conduct during his service as Commander of the Genoa in the battle of Navarin, but he was acquitted in 1829. He was married to Jane Searle Dickinson.
