Biographical History

A competition was held (circa 1899-1900) requesting submissions for St. Patrick's Lady Chapel. James Renwick's successor firm submitted these drawings anonymously. Charles T. Matthews won the competition and the Lady Chapel was constructed between 1901 and 1906.

From the description of [Competition drawings for the Lady Chapel of St. Patrick's Cathedral] [graphic] : [final submission] / Renwick, Aspinwall & Owen, Architects, 367 Fifth Avenue, New York [stamp]. [1900?] (Columbia University In the City of New York). WorldCat record id: 84598244

St. Patrick's Cathedral was finished in 1879, but for financial reasons the structure was terminated behind the high altar and remained that way for 20 years. Renwick had various schemes for the ambulatory and Lady Chapel, but none of them were realized before his death in 1895. A competition was held [ca. 1899-1900] requesting submissions for completion of the Lady Chapel. Renwick's successor firm (Renwick, Aspinall & Owen) entered the competition anonymously. Their designs were not chosen. Charles T. Matthews won the competition and construction lasted from 1901 to 1906.
