Biographical History
The Pennsylvania State University Press is the publishing arm of the university which serves the University community, citizens of Pennsylvania, and scholars worldwide by publishing books and journals with an emphasis on the humanities and social sciences, books about University life and history, and Pennsylvania history. The Pennsylvania State University Press traces its origins back to 1945, when the university created a committee "to study the advisability and practicability of establishing a Pennsylvania State College Press." The Pennsylvania State University Press was officially created in 1956. T. Rowland Slingluff, then director of the newly formed Department of Publications, was named acting director of the Press in 1958. By the time Slingluff retired in 1972, the Press was responsible for publishing over 150 titles. It continued to publish in diverse fields and was placed under the auspices of the Dean of the University Libraries and Scholarly Communications in 2006.
