The Pennsylvania State University Press traces its origins back to 1945, when the university created a committee "to study the advisability and practicability of establishing a Pennsylvania State College Press." The Pennsylvania State University Press was officially created in 1956. T. Rowland Slingluff, then director of the newly formed Department of Publications, was named acting director of the Press in 1958.
