Biographical History

Elias Howe (b. July 9, 1819, Spencer, MA–d. October 3, 1867, Brooklyn, NY) began his career as an apprentice in textile factory in Lowell, MA before working as a mechanic with carding machinery He then apprenticed with master mechanic Ari Davis and it was there he began to work on his sewing machine. Howe was not first to think of sewing machine, but he made specific refinements and awarded patent for it in 1846 for a lockstitch design. During the Civil War, he served as private with the 17th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry.
