October 3, 1867, Brooklyn, NY); apprenticed in textile factory in Lowell, MA before working as a mechanic with carding machinery; apprenticed with master mechanic Ari Davis; was not first to think of sewing machine but made specific refinements and awarded patent for it in 1846 for a lockstitch design; served as private during Civil War
