Biographical History
David "Scotty" Stuart Scott and Lillian "Jit" Scott, brother and sister, were both affected by World War I and the military. David Stuart served in the Twenty-Seventh Division, from New York, where he witnessed firsthand the ravages of trench warfare while in the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe; his correspondence vividly details life of the American soldier during the war. His sister, Lillian, corresponded regularly with many gentlemen stationed in various places during the conflict. Their voice adds to the story of the war. Much of the biographical information about the Scott family is unknown in this collection. Davis Stuart Scott was born on January 4, 1894. His military records show that he enlisted in Company "B" -- Seventy-First Infantry, National Guard, N.Y. on December 17, 1915; served along Mexican-American border from June 19-October 6, 1916; saw active duty during World War I, beginning his service from March 25, 1917; he was honorably discharged on April 1, 1919; He returned to service and was appointed as a Second Lieutenant, March 18, 1921, then later promoted to First Lieutenant on October 24, 1924--Company "C"--Seventy-First Infantry, New York National Guard. He was honorably discharged on February 4, 1925. While serving with the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe, during World War I, David Stuart Scott received the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Purple Heart. David Stuart Scott died on January 2, 1963 in Yonkers, N.Y. No biographical information is available for Lillian Scott, aside for being David Stuart Scott's sister.
