Biographical History

Dr. Chapmon Powell (1798-1870) was one of the early pioneer settlers of the Atlanta region and founded a large and well-known family. He served as sheriff of DeKalb County from 15 February 1833 untill 10 January 1834 and was a member of the Georgia Legislature in 1836. Powell lived in a log cabin near present day Clairmont and North Decatur Road, where he conducted his medical practice. With his wife Elizabeth (Betsy) Hardman Powell (1799-1850) they had a daughter named Martha A.J. Powell (1830-1917). In 1850 Dr. Powell moved to Atlanta where he built a house at the corner of Peachtree and Ellis streets, where he continued his medical practice.
