Powell lived in a log cabin near present day Clairmont and North Decatur Road, where he conducted his medical practice. With his wife Elizabeth (Betsy) Hardman Powell (1799-1850) they had a daughter named Martha A.J. Powell (1830-1917). In 1850 Dr. Powell moved to Atlanta where he built a house at the corner of Peachtree and Ellis streets, where he continued his medical practice.
