Biographical History
Detroit attorney and captain of Detroit militia.
A lawyer who came to Detroit from Va. before 1807 where he was a capt. in the local militia. On Apr. 28, 1808, he married Ann Binney, daughter of Gov. Wm. Hull. In 1810 the President appointed him collector of customs at Mackinac, but the Senate refused to confirm the act. On Mar. 12, 1812, he was commissioned. capt. in the 19th U.S. Inf., and in Dec., 1814, and Jan., 1815, was commandant of Detroit. A letter of Jan. 12, 1822, states Hickman had over not been a resident of Detroit for several years; and one of May 6, 1820, discloses that Mrs. Hickman was then living in Hollowell, Me.
