Biographical History

International self-help organization founded in 1914 by Marcus Garvey (1887-1940) in Jamaica. After moving to New York City in 1916, Garvey began to organize divisions of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (U.N.I.A.) throughout the United States. The Central Division came into being in 1936, the result of the factionalization which developed following Garvey's imprisonment in 1926 and his subsequent deportation.
