Biographical History

English novelist and playwright. A prolific and popular author, best remembered for The Hill, an idealization of school life at Harrow. Born at Sydenham, England, died at Bath. Lived in California in 1897. In 1883 he was a Lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade in England.

Author Horace Annesley Vachell was born in Sydenham, and educated at at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He lived in California for almost twenty years, returning to England around 1900 after the death of his first wife. He became a prolific and popular writer of novels, plays, short stories, essays, and autobiography, mostly good-humored accounts of English upper-middle-class life. He is perhaps best remembered for his first novel, The Hill, and for his most popular play, Quinneys'.
