Arthur Machen was born Arthur Llewellyn Jones in Wales; he took his mother's maiden name, Machen, as a child. He moved to London after the deaths of his parents and considered becoming a surgeon, but his interest in writing led him to a career in literature. He found success with atmospheric short stories and essays, many based on supernatural themes exploring a mystical world beneath the material world. His interest in ritual and the occult permeated his best work, and his pioneering efforts in fantasy and horror fiction influenced writers such as H.P. Lovecraft and Ray Bradbury. He was also a translator, critic, and novelist.
