U.S. senator from Alabama.
Bankhead was born 1872 July 2 to John H. and Tallulah Brockman Bankhead at Moscow, Lamar Co., Ala. He graduated from the University of Ala. with a B.A. in 1891 as president of his class. He graduated from Georgetown University in 1893 with a Bachelor of Laws, again as president of his class.
That same year he began practicing law in Jasper, Ala. 1894 Dec. 26 he married Musa Harkins at Fayette, Ala. He authored the Ala. election law under the 1901 Constitution, and was elected to the Ala. legislature from Walker Co., serving 1904-1905.
He served a campaign manager for his father and for William B. Bankhead on several occasions, and was president of the Bankhead Coal Mine, 1911-1925, and other coal mines in Walker Co. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1930, and reelected twice.
He and his wife had three children: Marion, Walter Will, and Louise. Bankhead died in the U.S. Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Md., 1946 June 12. He is buried in Jasper, Ala. at Oak Hill Cemetery.
